Cape Coral Police Arrest a Couple of Would-Be Burglars

(February 17, 2015)-  Cape Coral Police arrested two would-be burglars following a suspicious person call late Sunday afternoon.

At around 4:40 PM yesterday afternoon, Officers responded to the 2800 block of SW 40 St. on a suspicious person call.  Officers made contact with two subjects- Patrick T. O’Sullivan (W/M 02/06/87), and Ishmael A. Uriah Seymour (B/M 02/26/87) in a driveway of a residence.  The caller saw the black jeep pull suspiciously into their driveway, and the white male got out and rang her door bell and then looked around. The caller then called 911, as they didn't recognize the males or the vehicle.  It should be noted that within the past two weeks, a home was burglarized in that neighborhood, in which suspects broke into one of their vehicles, and then used the garage door opener to enter the home, all while the victims slept inside. The suspects in that burglary arrived in the area in a black SUV matching O'Sullivan's Jeep.

O'Sullivan and Seymour told officers that they were in the area when their kayak took on water and sank in a nearby canal.  However, basic details that they relayed to offers conflicted.  Officers located the kayak on the dock at the rear of a vacant house at 3226 SW 27th PL. Officers soon discovered there was absolutely no fishing gear in the kayak.  However, they did find several pry bars, bolt cutters, a tool belt, a knife, screwdrivers, a rubber mallet, as well as a baseball bat and binoculars, 4 Locos alcohol cans, and miscellaneous clothing.

Officers also found the rear slider of the vacant house standing open. After clearing the house, they found no one inside, however, Officers located severe damage to the interior wall of a bedroom on the Northeast corner of the home. Officers found the drywall had been haphazardly ripped out and the wiring and copper inside had been cut out as far back as possible. There were two overturned paint buckets adjacent to the wall that appeared as if they had been used for seats.

Based on the totality of the circumstances and the inability of either O'Sullivan or Seymour to dispel the fears of Officers for the safety of persons and property in the area, both were placed under arrest for Loitering and Prowling and Possession of Burglary Tools.

Cape Coral Police Department Investigative Services Bureau Property Detectives and Forensics personnel responded to the scene.  During an inventory search of the vehicle prior to tow, a Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun was located under the right front passenger seat. A second Browning handgun had already been observed by Officers in plain view in the vehicle center console. Both handguns were collected by Forensics.  The kayak and vacant residence were processed as well.  Additional charges pending further investigation.

ARRESTED: Patrick T. O’Sullivan (W/M 02/06/87), of 2315 NW 12th Street, Cape Coral, FL.
CHARGES: Loitering & Prowling and Possession of Burglary Tools.

Gianna Harner- 4th Grade            Christa McAuliffe Elementary
Alexis Dehetre-3rd Grade
These two students have donated their hair to a program called “Locks of Love”.  Locks for Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.  Their donated beautiful long hair will make wigs  and be provided to underprivileged children who have suffered an illness to help restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.

Hunter Shull – 5th Grade            Christa McAuliffe Elementary
First grader Lindsie just moved to Cape Coral from North Carolina and was able to adjust to all the changes going on except for being dropped off at the car ramp.   After seeing this, the girl’s teacher agreed to meet the student at the car but then was absent from school a few weeks later.  At the car ramp that morning, Hunter opened the door for Lindsie and saw the distress on both their faces.   Hunter stepped up in the teacher’s place, ensuring that the little girl got out of her car and made it to the breezeway and onto class.  Every day after that, Hunter faithfully met the little girl at the car ramp taking away her fears.  Hunter is a very respectable and helpful young man and his teacher states that “it has been a blessing to watch him grow”.

Ethan Imfeld – 1st Grade            Skyline Elementary
Ethan was at home one day with his mom when she had an “episode”.  During this one “episode” Ethan texted his dad, who was not at home, to let him know what was happening.  His dad asked Ethan to call “9-1-1, which Ethan did and his dad came home right away.  Apparently when the paramedics arrived and checked his mom’s blood sugar, it was dangerously low.  Ethan not only saved his mother’s life once but did the same thing on another occasion.  He is an all around wonderful kid with an amazing attitude.  He does his best every single day and thankfully his best saved him mom’s life not once but twice.

Raseem Biem-Aime  - 7th Grade        Caloosa Middle
Raseem made tremendous changes in his behavior and academics this year.  His business teacher Mrs. Tikka had this to say about him.  “Last year when Raseem was in my Business Keyboarding class, he struggled.  This year, he was placed in my Computer Applications in Business 1 and Career Planning class and in my “Leader in Me” support time.  His behavior and attitude turned around after he wrote a rap and performed it in front of the class about the “seven habits” of the “Leader in Me” program.  He truly understood the meaning of the qualities of a leader.  From that point forward, he excelled at everything he did in class and became a role model leader.  He strived to do his best.  At the end of the semester, when asked for volunteers to present their Photo Album project, Raseem was the first to volunteer and proceeded to show his Photo Album with at least 50 pictures that depicted his life in PowerPoint incorporating his own video introduction, music, animated graphics, transitions, charts, SmartArt, and sound.”  It was one of the best projects his teacher had ever seen.  He gained his confidence, determined the leader in himself and changed his outlook on life.  Mrs. Tikka stated, “What a pleasure as a teacher to have watched his metamorphous.  He has come such a long way and I am honor as a teacher to have witnessed this.”

Thomas Arriaga – 7th Grade            Challenger Middle
Thomas is a kind, considerate and a gentle young man.  He is truly unselfish and wanted to help out.  Thomas has had shoulder length hair for a number of years.  Recently he decided to cut his hair so that he could donate it to “Locks of Love”.  His hair will be made into a wig for a person who has lost their own hair while undergoing chemotherapy.

Mark Terwilliger – 10th Grade        Oasis High School
Katie Terwilliger – 7th Grade         Oasis Middle School
For the past four years, Mark and Katie have volunteered their services at the Salvation Army serving lunch on Thanksgiving Day.  Each year the two look forward to the occasion.  When Katie found out that she may not be able to volunteer this year because of other commitments, she was quite disappointed.  When plans changed, Katie’s first comment was that she would now be able to go. Both Mark and Katie have such a great attitude about going and look forward to the experience every year.

Alexander Erickson – 2nd Grade        Cape Elementary
William Erickson – Kindergarten
Alex and William, despite their young age have shown their compassion for less fortunate animals.  Previous birthdays, both Alex and William have celebrated their birthdays with their friends doing fun activities.  However, in the last three years, in lieu of gifts, Alex and William have requested bags of dog or cat food to donate to the local animal shelter.  Both Alex and William are more than willing to do this and should be commended for this selfless act especially at such a young age.

Kevin Grassel – 7th Grade            Diplomat Middle
On Sunday, January 4th @ 6:00pm Kevin was walking home after playing football and immediately noticed smoke coming from the roof of a home.  Kevin looked through the window and stated he couldn’t see anything due to all the black smoke.  He quickly, flagged down another neighbor and told him what he saw and asked him to call 911.  Division Chief Ryan Lamb reported that “If it were not for the quick thinking of this 12 year old boy and quick actions of the Cape Coral Fire Department, the damage could have been much worse.  Kevin’s quick thinking saved not only this house from more damage but also saved the surrounding homes from fire.

(March 6, 2015)-  After months of preparation and thousands of miles ridden in training, Cape Coral Police Officers will take to the streets this weekend on bicycles and in cars in the first of many High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) operations focusing on bicycle and pedestrian safety.

The funding for these operations is provided through a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation for High Visibility Enforcement addressing pedestrian and bicycle safety.

Officers will target areas of the city where bicycle and pedestrian traffic is prevalent and will distribute educational materials, issue warnings and/or citations to pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists who commit violation of Florida statutes.  The main objective of this effort is to reduce traffic crashes and fatalities involving pedestrians and bicyclists through the use of selective traffic education and enforcement operations.

This campaign is a component of Florida's Bicycle/Pedestrian Focused Initiative Communication & High Visibility Enforcement Implementation under the direction of the Florida Department of Transportation and the University of South Florida.

The Cape Coral Police Department wants to remind you that:

  • Pedestrians should always walk on the sidewalk and if no sidewalk, walk facing traffic.
  • Pedestrians and bicyclists should not wear headphones or talk on their cell phones.
  • Pedestrians and bicyclists should cross streets at marked crosswalks or intersections when possible and obey traffic signals such as WALK/DON'T WALK signs.
  • Bicyclists should have their bicycle equipped with a white light on the front visible from a distance of 500 feet and a red light visible from a distance of 600 feet, between sunset and sunrise during operation.
  • Bicyclists operating on the roadway are subject to obeying all traffic control devices to include stop signs and lighted traffic signals.
  • Bicyclists operating upon a sidewalk or crosswalk shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian.

DNA Leads Police to Burglar

$

(March 11, 2015)-  A burglary from last summer was just solved, thanks to some solid police work and DNA evidence.

On August 8, 2014, Cape Coral Police responded to a burglary in the 4400 block of SW 8th Place.  Officer D. Gray met with victims who stated that between 6:00 PM and 8:15 PM, someone broke a window on the home and entered their residence.  Items were disturbed in the home, but they weren't able to see that anything had been taken.

One of the victims stated she was arriving home at around 7:50 PM from shopping. As she neared her home, she saw her ex-boyfriend, Travis Schultz riding in the area on his moped. The victim honked her horn and waved at Schultz, who then followed her to her house. The victim stated she was only stopping at her house briefly, but she invited Schultz inside. She spoke with Schultz briefly while she changed shoes, and then they both exited the house. During this time, Schultz was only in the living room. The victim remembered that when Schultz pulled up on his moped, he took off his helmet, and was wearing a blue bandana underneath. The victim added that he took the bandana off while they were talking.

The victim said that Schultz had been in the area to deliver narcotics, which he was known to do on his moped. The victim also said they have not been together for approximately nine months, and he had not been in her apartment since their split. Schultz told the victim he was heading home and seemed to follow her out of the neighborhood on his moped, however, she lost sight of him as she drove north on Skyline Boulevard. This stood out as odd to her as she never saw him pass by northbound on Skyline Boulevard. The victim also said that Schultz knew she had kept cash in the jewelry boxes that were disturbed.  The victim provided a sworn written statement and wished to press charges.

Officer Gray found a large amount of glass on the laundry room floor which seemed to indicate that entry was made via the laundry room window via the rear lanai. A large grill was positioned on the rear lanai, just below the laundry room window, and several latent prints were found on the top of the grill. Officer Gray located a blue bandana, wrapped around one of the victim's ashtrays, lying on top of a milk crate. It appeared that the suspect used the ashtray to smash the window and wrapped the bandana around the ashtray. The victim said the bandana matched the one Schultz had removed from his head when he arrived earlier in the evening.

In the victim's bedroom, Officer Gray found several droplets of blood on the floor at the foot of the bed. A bloody finger print was found on the lid of a black jewelry box that the victim thought had been moved.

Cape Coral Police Department Forensic Technician C. Potts responded to the scene and took digital photographs, collected blood samples, and lifted latent prints. Potts also collected the black jewelry box, the piece of paper, and the bandana for further forensic processing.

Based on the investigation in its entirety, a DNA sample was needed from Travis Schultz to compare to the blood sample collected from the burglary.

On November 20, 2014 Detective M. Lebid applied for, and was granted, a search warrant to collect the DNA from Travis Schultz.  On November 21, 2014, Detectives Lebid and Mino, with the Cape Coral Police Department Property Crimes Unit, met with Travis Schultz at the Lee County Core Facility where he was currently housed on unrelated charges.  The DNA was obtained and later sent to FDLE pending results.

On January 6, 2015, a report was received from FDLE which detailed the that the DNA profile obtained from the bedroom floor (blood) matched the DNA profile from Travis Schultz.  The probability of it being anyone else was 1 in 740 quadrillion

Yesterday, Travis Schultz was located at 2514 Santa Barbara Boulevard (Ruby Tuesday's) by Detectives Lebid and Mino and placed under arrest for the charges of Burglary to a Dwelling and Criminal Mischief.  The value of the damaged window was estimated to be $50.  Schultz was transported to the Cape Coral Police Station for interview then later to the Lee County Jail.
