Erin Ramey – 7th Grade at Caloosa Middle
Erin is a remarkable young lady who has compassion for mankind beyond her years.    She helps out elementary school students every morning before middle school starts.  She is a leader and is always willing to help other students if they are struggling with their assignments.  The other day Erin witnessed a student being bullied in the cafeteria and she was not going to tolerate the behavior.  Erin consoled the student being bullied telling her that “every person is unique and has something to offer the world and to always be true to yourself.”  She then confronted the bully and told her to stop putting others down to make herself look good.  Today, because of what Erin did, the student is no longer being bullied and is “confident and courageous” in her outlook on life.

Michael Pac – 11th Grade at Cape Coral H.S.
Michael and his classmate have been friends ever since elementary.  They recently lost another classmate to suicide in December of 2014.  Michael recognized the same feeling of helplessness in his classmate as the friend they had recently lost.  Michael reached out, listening to his friend, giving him encouragement and strength to continue on, and letting him know he is always there for him.   Despite Michael and his other friends’ efforts to reach out, Michael still found his friend to be despondent.   Seeing the magnitude of his classmate’s depression, Michael immediately went to school officials and informed them that his friend needed help.  Thanks to Michael his friend is getting the help and the support that he needs.

Melanie Pena – 6th Grade at Challenger Middle
Melanie is a very thoughtful student.  She had very long hair and wanted to donate it to a good cause.  Melanie cut off 12” of her hair and placed it in a box.  She then went on line to do some research to see where she could donate her hair to.  She found a site called “Wigs for Kids” which has existed for over 30 years and provides hair pieces for kids who have lost their hair.

Steven Rua – 8th Grade at Challenger Middle
Steven is a very special young man.  He is kind, considerate, and always thoughtful in his actions.  He has volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity sweeping and cleaning homes.  Steven has also volunteered at the soup kitchen serving food on a weekly basis. He is a mentor and a role model to other students and counsels them about “doing the right thing."

Shea McMurrain – 6th Grade at Challenger Middle
Shea’s passion for his volunteer work at the Animal Rescue Center is one to be admired.  He loves cats and kittens and enjoys giving them “human” exposure to help them become great pets.  He shares his experiences freely and motivates others to become a volunteer at the shelter.

Katelyn Bly – 5th Grade at Christa McAuliffe Elementary
Alexis Klepper – 5th Grade at Christa McAuliffe Elementary
Alexis with her friend Katelyn realized that the holiday was closely approaching and that some students will be going without toys decided to do something about it.  They pitched their idea of starting a Toy Drive to their Principal Mrs. Collins, who gave her support to start the project.   They developed posters and made announcements on the school news.  Alexis and Katelyn asked students to bring in new and gently used toys to give to the “Oma’s Heart Charity”.  Their hard work and effort enabled them to collect over 500 toys for the charity. This first toy drive will become an annual event at the school.

Joseph Fagan – 1st Grade at Gulf Elementary
Joseph found money on the basketball court and immediately turned it into the PE Teacher.  This took great character and honesty.

Kayla Vandemark – 8th Grade at Oasis Middle School
Kayla stopped by to speak to a teacher after school; when leaving the classroom Kayla noticed money on the floor and turned it into the teacher.  Kayla displayed honesty and integrity.

Maia Molina – 8th Grade at Oasis Middle School
Maia found money at the end of the school day and turned it into the office.  She displayed honesty and good character.

Adriana Mateo – 7th Grade at Oasis Middle School
Adriana displayed truthfulness and integrity when she found money and turned it into the office.

Anna Coogan – 7th Grade at Oasis Middle School
Anna found money and turned it into the office.  She displayed integrity and good character.

Xiari Scott- 8th Grade at Oasis Middle School

Cape Coral Police Department Unveils New Motorcycles for Traffic Unit

$

(March 18, 2015)-  Today, the Cape Coral Police Department unveiled its new fleet of BMW Motorcycles for the Traffic Unit.

With the purchase of the BMW R-1200-RT-P Authority Motorcycle, the City of Cape Coral embarked in a five year plan to utilize these motorcycles as an integral part of the CCPD Traffic Unit’s initiative to thwart aggressive driving, reduce traffic crashes, curtail traffic homicides, and keep the citizens of this city safe as they travel to and from their destinations.

In the past, the Cape Coral Police Department would lease Harley Davidson Police Motorcycles for two years and turn them back in to the leasing agent.  At the start and end of each lease, the Department would have to pay to have the Police equipment installed and uninstalled on the Police Motorcycle and then reinstalled onto the new Police motorcycle.  This would cost about $700-1000 per motorcycle to have this done.  Also, at the end of the lease, we would not have anything left, but lease payment receipts.

Now, the Cape Coral Police Department will own these Police Motorcycles and will only have to pay to have the Police equipment installed and remove one time over the next five years (2.5 times with the Harley lease).

Major benefits of the 2015 BMW R-1200-RT-P Authority are:

  • Better fuel economy (40-60 mpg / competitor 28-32 mpg)
  • Less required maintenance (every 6000 miles / competitor every 2500 miles)
  • Lighter overall weight (approx. 250 lb.)
  • Traction Control (prevents tire slippage)
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring (safety to rider)
  • Integrated ABS brakes
  • Comfortable riding position
  • Cooler running engine (water cooled) – will keep rider cooler during summer months

Emergency Lighting and comfort:

  • Lights at the driver’s eye level
  • LED – visible over .9 miles away
  • Take Down Lights
  • Alley Lights
  • Running Lights
  • Wireless Headsets
  • Heated grips and seats – for those cool winter mornings.

“This is the culmination of almost 3 years of testing and evaluation.  The partnership with BMW allows us to field a smaller, lighter, more maneuverable, cooler bike, that is packed with the newest technology to keep our officers safe.  These motorcycles will be an important part of our ongoing efforts to increase safety on the roads in Cape Coral. All of these benefits come at an overall cost savings to the taxpayer at almost $5000 per bike.”- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.

The new Cape Coral Police Department Motor units hit the road today.

Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Trafficking Arrests

(March 19, 2015)-  A traffic stop for a minor equipment violation led to much more.

Wednesday night around 9:00 PM,  a Cape Coral Police Officer stopped a silver Ford Mustang traveling north at the 400 block of Santa Barbara Blvd S, for driving without working tag lights. The vehicle came to a stop in the parking lot of 8 NE Pine Island Rd (McDonalds).

During the course of the traffic stop, a Cape Coral Police Department K9 Officer arrived on scene and had his canine, "Kev," perform an open air sniff of the vehicle. The dog alerted to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle and a narcotics investigation was started.  The driver, Jordan Lombardy, W/M, 5-27-1988, of 2132 NW 22nd Pl., Cape Coral, FL and the passenger, Bethany Bolten, W/F, DOB:04-26-1992, of 121 SE 18 St., Cape Coral, FL were removed form the vehicle and detained.

A search of the car revealed a purple Crown Royal felt bag stuffed between the passenger seat and passenger door. Inside of the bag were several bags containing a white crystal substance, and one bag containing a light brownish powder that had hardened into a single rock. The white crystal substance tested positive for Methamphetamine . The light brownish powder tested positive for Heroin.

Also found in the vehicle was a green rubber container located under the driver seat of the vehicle. Inside the green container was, what appeared to be, marijuana wax. The wax tested positive for THC.

In the trunk of the vehicle, concealed inside of three separate "STINKY BAGS" (designed to mask the odor of its contents) was, what appeared to be, synthetic marijuana. The substance tested  positive for synthetic cannabis. Also in the trunk of the vehicle concealed in a separate "STINKY BAG" was a green leafy substance. The substance tested positive for THC. The marijuana was also packaged in two separate baggies, a manner consistent with packaging it for sale. Also found in the trunk of the vehicle was a marijuana pipe.

During a search of Bolten, she admitted to concealing a blue plastic container on her person. A female Officer was called to the scene to conduct a further search of Bolten and at that time Bolten turned the container over. Inside the container was more heroin. The heroin was packaged in several small plastic baggies.

Officers determined that Lombardy was operating his vehicle outside his DL restrictions of business purpose only as he had driven to Bolten's residence to pick her up and were going to McDonalds.

Lombardy was placed under arrest for the following charges:

Trafficking in Heroin, Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Sell, Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Sell, Possession of Synthetic Cannabis over 3g, Possession of Paraphernalia, and for Violation of Drivers License Restrictions.

Bolten was arrested for the following charges:

Trafficking in Heroin and Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Sell.

Photographs were taken of the narcotics in the vehicle and later submitted into CCPD evidence. The narcotics and paraphernalia were all weighed, placed into CCPD evidence, and sent to FDLE for further testing. The baggies containing the narcotics were also submitted for fingerprinting.

Also during a search of the vehicle a wad of cash was discovered under the driver seat floor mat, along with two other separate money rolls located in Lombardy's pockets. The sum of the cash found was $2,061. The currency was later photographed and placed into CCPD evidence.

During the search of the vehicle Lombardy's phone was also located and the phone was seized and placed into evidence. Detectives will seek a search warrant for the phone to search for further evidence of narcotics sales.

Lombardy and Bolten were transported to CCPD for booking and later transported to Lee County Jail.

ARRESTED: Jordan Lombardy, W/M, 5-27-1988, of 2132 NW 22nd Pl., Cape Coral, FL. CHARGES: Trafficking in Heroin, Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Sell, Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Sell, Possession of Synthetic Cannabis over 3g, Possession of Paraphernalia, and Violation of Drivers License Restrictions.

(March 26, 2015)-  The first Police body cameras will begin hitting the street in Cape Coral today.

In what is being called a "soft-launch" some Cape Coral Police Officers will begin using the Taser Axon Flex body camera systems on patrol starting tonight.  A small number of units will be put into service tonight to test the cameras, the docking stations, IT infrastructure, and wireless technologies that make the systems work.  Officers will also get to put their training on the systems, the software, and the new department policy, to use.  Additional units will be fielded over the coming weeks, with full deployment of the 60 units purchased, anticipated by the end of April.

"Any time you have a large-scale deployment of new technology, you will run into issues you didn't anticipate.  By doing a slow roll-out, we can work out the kinks and make the transition as smooth as possible.  We are excited to get these Taser Axon Flex systems out in the field and in use."- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.

Police began an extensive search utilizing Patrol, K-9, and Aviation units but were unable to initially locate a suspect.

Open House Party Gets Out of Hand; Officer Injured; One Arrested

(March 30, 2015)-  On March 28, 2015 at about midnight, Cape Coral Police responded to 2029 NW 9th Street, Cape Coral on a loud noise complaint.

The responding Officer found that an open house party was in progress.  The Officer saw numerous cars parked on the street.  Party-goers, many of which were obviously underage, were walking to and from the house and cars.  Music could be heard from several houses away.

As the Officer arrived, party-goers fled into the house, closed the garage door, and turned off the lights.  The Officer attempted to make contact at the front door, but even after several attempts at knocking no one came to the door, but the officer could hear yelling inside the home.  While standing close to the home, the Officer should still smell burnt cannabis coming form the area of the garage.

As the Officer walked  back towards the driveway he was met by a subject claiming to be the homeowner (later identified as Derek Jeunegens) but refusing to identify himself.

As the Officer was attempting to investigate the noise complaint and what appeared to be an open house party, Jeunegens was uncooperative, demanding that the officer leave unless he "had a warrant." Jeunegens became verbally abusive and belligerent toward the Officer.  When the Officer attempted to detain Jeunegens, a struggle ensued.  Jeunegens repeatedly pulled away and actively physically resisted the Officer's attempts to secure him in handcuffs, despite repeated verbal commands to stop.

During the struggle, Jeunegens slipped out of his jacket to evade the Officer.  Once free, Jeunegens struck the officer in the throat and attempted to flee into the home.

The Officer deployed his Taser, subduing Jeunegens temporarily.

At this point, a large crowd had gathered in the driveway area and in the yard.  Many of the subjects were yelling profanities and threats at the Officer.

Jeunegens continued being verbally abusive toward the Officer and would not comply with the Officer's orders to stay on the ground and was Tased a second time, gaining temporary compliance.  Someone from the crowd threw a beer bottle at the Officer, striking him in the head.  The gathering crowd shifted closer and individuals began making overt threats to harm the Officer, some going so far as to remove their shirts and assume aggressive postures.

Jeunegens continued to be verbally abusive toward the Officer and refused to comply with the Officer's directions to stay on the ground, resulting in a third application of the Taser.  After he fell to the ground again, the sirens of approaching police vehicles became audible.  The crowd heard the sirens of responding backup units and started yelling at each other to run.  Most of the crowd fled the scene before additional Officers arrived.

Jeunegens was secured in handcuffs.  he was positively identified by his ID card in his wallet.  LCEMS arrived to check Jeunegens.  They removed the Taser probes from his body, and applied first aid as needed.  LCEMS also provided first aid for the Officer at the scene.

Additional Officers arrived and checked the residence and made contact with neighbors.  Neighbors from two different addresses provided sworn written statements regarding the party and noise.

Derek Jeunegens was placed under arrest and transported first to CCPD and then to Lee County Jail without further incident, and in apparent good health.  He was charged with Resisting without Violence, Resisting with Violence, and with Battery (LEO).

"This situation could have been resolved with a ticket and some phone calls to disappointed parents.  Unfortunately, Mr. Jeunegens took a different approach.  We are thankful that in spite of  Jeunegens' own actions, and those of certain party-goers, that no one was seriously hurt."- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.

ARRESTED: Derek C. Jeunegens (B/M 03-17-97) of 2920 NW 9th St., Cape Coral, FL. CHARGES: Resisting w/o Violence, Resisting with Violence, Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer.

(April 1, 2015)-  Shortly after midnight, Cape Coral Police responded to 139 Nicholas Parkway E. in reference to a shooting into a home.

A witness told police that a male known to them as Tevin Nelson was standing in the driveway in front of the garage at this residence and that they saw Nelson take a black shirt, wrap the shirt around his face and walk towards the side of the house. The witness then stated that they saw Nelson point the gun in the direction of a bedroom window and fire off one round, but Nelson's gun appeared to jam.  Nelson then ran on foot towards the 7-Eleven convenience store at the intersection of Santa Barbara Boulevard and Nicholas Parkway E. and was picked up by a silver car which went south on SW Santa Barbara Place.

Officers located the suspect vehicle on SW Santa Barbara Place and conducted a high-risk traffic stop, removing and detaining four subjects inside the car.  The front passenger was identified as Tevin Nelson B/M, DOB: 6-4-1994, of 3417 SW 1st Pl., Cape Coral, FL.  On the floorboard of the front passenger seat was a partially visible firearm wrapped in a black cloth.

A show-up was completed at the scene of the traffic stop and Nelson was positively identified by a witness.

Investigation revealed that Nelson came to the residence looking for a missing cell phone, after tracking it to that location using GPS software.  Nelson knew the resident and had been to the home on previous occasions.  When his attempt to retrieve his cell phone failed, Nelson decided to go home and change into dark clothing, get a gun, and come back to the residence.  There, Nelson fired one round at the resident's bedroom window when the gun malfunctioned.  He then fled the scene and was picked up by friends at the 7-11 nearby.

Forensics personnel responded to the scene and processed both scenes for evidence.

Based on the fact that Nelson stated post-Miranda that he consciously and intentionally shot a firearm into an occupied dwelling; probable cause was established for violation of F.S.S 790.19, Shooting Into an Occupied Dwelling.

In addition, based on the fact that the weapon Nelson indicated was his, was readily accessible at his feet, inside the vehicle and was concealed from the ordinary sight of another person by the black piece of clothing; probable cause was established for violation of F.S.S 790.01, Carrying a Concealed Firearm.

Nelson was transported to Cape Coral Police Department for processing then later to Lee County Jail.

ARRESTED: Tevin Nelson B/M, DOB: 6-4-1994, of 3417 SW 1st Pl., Cape Coral, FL. CHARGES: Carrying a Concealed Firearm and Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling.

Cape Coral Police Respond to a Discharge of Firearm Call at Target

(April 8, 2015)-  Last night around 8:00 PM, Cape Coral Police responded to the Target located at 1890 NE Pine Island Road on a discharge of firearm call.

Officers responded and quickly learned that a customer had an apparent unintentional discharge of a firearm inside the store. Surveillance video showed that after the customer checked out at a register, she was putting something into her purse when a firearm discharged from inside of the purse.  The round ricocheted off the floor and went into the ceiling.  No one was injured, but floor tiles and the ceiling sustained damage.

The customer was described as a black female in her 30's wearing a blue shirt and carrying a white purse.  After the discharge, she quickly left the store and got into a silver Hyundai.  She was last seen heading eastbound on Pine Island Road.  She was gone prior to the arrival of Officers and was not located last evening.  Charges may still be pending for the damage to property, depending on what the victim (Target) wishes to pursue.

"We are glad that this incident didn't turn into a tragedy.  We want to remind people who choose to carry a concealed firearm that carrying a gun loose in a pocket, purse, or bag is never a good idea.  Always carry a firearm in a quality holster that covers the trigger guard and if you choose to cary in a bag or purse, we suggest using a model that is purpose-built for firearms."- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.
