Cape Coral to Host Military Training Operation in the Northwest

(May 26, 2014)-  It may look like a scene out of Red Dawn, but it is not an invasion.

The City of Cape Coral will be hosting another military training exercise on June 14, 2014 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM in and around Crystal Lake, located at NW 35 Lane and Caloosa Parkway.

This operation, called "helocasting," will train soldiers to safely dismount from a helicopter that is in-flight, into a body of water, while wearing all of their gear.

Throughout the day, there will be Army Blackhawk helicopters loading soldiers at a nearby landing zone and dropping them off in Crystal Lake.

Cape Coral Police Department, Cape Coral Fire Department, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the US Army will have vehicles and personnel in the air, on the ground, and in the water, directing traffic and maintaining a safe training environment for our soldiers.

"The operation is taking place in a sparsely populated area of the city away from major thoroughfares, so we anticipate traffic will not be much of a problem.  This exercise should provide a very interesting show for local residents in the area."- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer

(June 13, 2014)-  On June 12, 2014, at approximately 6:45 PM, Cape Coral Police Officers were dispatched to 2800 Santa Barbara Blvd, Cape Coral, Lee County, Florida in reference to shots fired.

Upon arrival, Officers met with victim, who reported that he was riding his bike when a vehicle went by him at a high rate of speed.  When he got next to the car at the stop light, he told the driver he needed to slow down.  The driver began yelling and threatening the victim.  Munn rode away when the light changed and the vehicle swerved towards him and cut in front of him.  The driver got out and began threatening to beat up the victim.  Three other motorists witnessed the victim being threatened.  They feared for his safety and stopped to assist him.

A female passenger was in the suspect vehicle and she moved to the driver seat and she began yelling to the male got into the car.  The male got into the passenger seat and as they drove by, the male pointed a semi-automatic handgun towards them and then fired 4 shots into the air.  As the vehicle turned south onto Santa Barbara Boulevard, the male turned and fired a shot at the four victims.  One of the victims reported that he heard the bullet go past him very close.  One of the motorists followed the suspect vehicle and lost it in the 100 block of SE 30th Street.  The vehicle was described as a maroon Ford Fusion, 4-door, with GA license plate.  All of the involved parties reported that they were in fear of being shot.

Cape Coral Police Officers, including the Street Crimes Unit (SCU) began searching for the vehicle and suspect that the victim's described.  A similar vehicle was located backed into the driveway at 325 SE 30th Street.  When officers approached they noticed that the license was the same as described by the victims.  A subject came outside of 325 SE 30th Street and when he saw officers near the residence, he ran back inside and then re-exited.  Officers detained the subject and eventually (after a perimeter was established on the house and the Cape Coral Police Department SWAT team responded) the other occupants exited the residence after multiple requests.

"Show-ups" were conducted and 3 of the victims positively identified one of the males as being the person who shot a firearm at them and fled the scene, the fourth victim was able to partially identify the subject by description.  The male was identified as: Pascual Ruiz III,W/M, DOB: 11-8-85, of 408 NE 24th Avenue, Cape Coral.  The residence and vehicle were secured pending the issuance of a search warrant.

Based upon the investigation Ruiz was placed under arrest for four counts of Aggravated Assault with a Firearm/Deadly Weapon F.S.S. 784.021(1a) - Felony of the Third Degree (one count against each victim) and later transported to LCJ in apparent good health.

She got into her vehicle where she could see into the store through the windows. The witness stated that she could see one of the males with a handgun and it looked like they were robbing the store. The witness called 911 and continued to watch the store. She watched as the two black males exited the store and ran around the back of the building and got into a vehicle and drove away. The witness followed the vehicle as it headed south toward SW 28th St and then took a left turn and headed toward Skyline Blvd. The suspect vehicle took a left onto Skyline Blvd and headed north toward Veteran's Parkway. At this time police were in the area and had the suspect vehicle and sight. The witness then turned around and returned to the store and waited for police to arrive.

The store manager was working in the store as it was about to close when two black males entered the store with their heads and faces covered and carrying handguns. The store manager stated that the two suspects threatened to kill him and his employee if they did not open the safe and give them the money. He also stated that he was hit in the head with a gun multiple times as he was trying to cooperate with the suspects. he finally got the money out and the males placed it in a bag and fled the store.

A store employee stated that she was in the process of closing the store when two black males entered the store and robbed it at gun point. The suspects both stated over and over that if they did not cooperate they would kill both her and the manager and that one of the suspects hit the manager multiple times on the head with a gun. The suspects got the money from the safe and both registers and fled. Both the manager and the employee stated that they were in fear for their lives. More than $300 but less than $5000.00 was removed from the store during the robbery.

Officers observed the suspect vehicle as described by the witness as it was pulling onto Skyline Blvd. and heading north. They turned on their lights and sirens in an attempt to pull the vehicle over. The vehicle pulled away at a high rate of speed in an attempt to flee the officers. As the vehicle was heading toward the intersection of Skyline Blvd. and Veterans Parkway the suspects hit a vehicle (Cape Coral Police Department Case # 14-010049). The suspect vehicle continued through the intersection, northbound on Skyline Blvd. Just past the intersection, the suspect vehicle made a U-turn and headed back south bound on Skyline Blvd toward Veterans Parkway. At Veterans Parkway the suspect vehicle made a left turn and proceeded to head east on Veterans Parkway.  At this point the suspect vehicle turned off its headlights and continued at a high rate of speed in an effort to hide from police. As the suspect vehicle continued east it entered into the intersection at Santa Barbara Blvd. and Veterans Parkway and hit another vehicle.  The vehicle sustained heavy damage and the driver was also injured and had to be transported to the Cape Coral Hospital for treatment (Cape Coral Police Department Case #14-010044).

The suspect vehicle also sustained heavy damage and went about another 100 feet were both the driver and the passenger jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot. The driver went north while the passenger fled south. The driver was apprehended near the intersection of Santa Barbara Blvd and Veterans  Parkway and was later identified as Jonas Tramell Griffin, DOB: 4/25/89.

The passenger, in an attempt to hide from police, entered the lanai of an occupied residence. Officers located the male, later identified as Justin Devon Diggs was located hiding in the pool box on the lanai of 2614 SW Santa Barbara Pl. The witness positively identified both suspects as the males that had committed the robbery. The store manager and employee both positively identified Griffin as one of the males in the robbery and both stated that he was the suspect who had hit the manager in the head multiple times with the gun. Both suspects were transported to a local hospital for treatment due to the vehicle crash.

"It is too early to know if these suspects are directly involved with other Dollar Store robberies we have seen in Cape Coral and in other parts of SW Florida. We will have to see what clues and information are revealed in the investigation that is ongoing.  We are proud of the rapid, professional, and tactical response of our officers.  Our thoughts are with the crash victim who was injured by the recklessness of these men and we hope for a speedy and full recovery."- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.
