Traffic Alert:  Afternoon Traffic Crash Will Affect Morning Commute

(May 8, 2014)-  A traffic crash that occurred Wednesday afternoon will have lasting effects on the Thursday morning commute.

Cape Coral Police Department worked a traffic crash involving a school bus around 5:30 PM Wednesday afternoon.  The crash occurred at the intersection of Chiquita Boulevard and Pine Island Road.  While there were no injuries, the crash did cause substantial damage to the traffic light control box, knocking out the traffic signal at that intersection.

Officers have been directing traffic at that intersection since the crash occurred.  At this time, due to the extent of the damage to the signal equipment, there is no estimate as to when the signal repair will be complete.  Temporary modifications to the intersection have been made that will affect traffic flow during the morning commute.  Those changes are:

  • Northbound Chiquita is blocked off and is being detoured at SW 4th Street.
  • Southbound Chiquita is blocked off and is being detoured at SW 6th Terrace.
  • East and Westbound Pine Island Rd. are open, but there are temporary stop signs in place at the intersection of Chiquita Boulevard.

The Cape Coral Police Department urges commuters who normally pass through the intersection to seek an alternate route.

When we are able to provide additional information regarding the signal repair, we will post an update.

Cape Coral Police Department Needs Your Help Locating a Runaway

(May 9, 2014)-  Cape Coral Police need the public's assistance in locating a missing person/runaway.

Shelby Lynn Geraci, W/F, DOB: 1/25/1999, of 733 NW 39th Avenue, Cape Coral, FL, was last seen by her grandfather on April 10, 2014 at around 8:00 AM when he dropped her off at Mariner High School.

Based on information gathered so far, investigators believe that Shelby ran away and is staying with friends.  Investigators do not believe Shelby is in immediate danger, and she has a history of running away in the past.

"Often times, runaways seek assistance from friends to stay away from home.  The friends want to help, and think that they are doing right by their friend. However, all this does is prevent the family from healing, which in the long-run, harms the runaway.  Not to mention, interference with custody is a crime and can get the well-meaning friends in a lot of trouble."- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer

If you have any information on the location of Shelby Lyn Geraci, please contact the Cape Coral Police Department at 239-574-3223. You can also submit an anonymous tip. Go to www.capecops.com/tips or text a tip- text CCPD+"Your Message" to CRIMES (274637).

Over a 3 month investigative period the following were arrested:

  • Willie James Tyler (B/M 01/14/83) - 3 counts Sale of Cocaine (1 count within 1000’ feet of a church)/3 counts Possession of Cocaine/1 count Trafficking an Opium Derivative (30 Dilaudid pills, 6 grams)/1 count of Resisting w/o Violence.

Two additional subjects are each pending arrest for 1 count Sale Of Cocaine and 1 count Possession of Cocaine.

"Our VIN Detectives have done an outstanding job at focusing on an area that has, in recent years, seen not only physical blight, but also the blight of hard-core narcotics activity.  Hopefully, through continued enforcement activities, renovation and growth in that area, and partnership with our community, we can create an environment where such activity simply can't take hold."- Det. Cape Coral Police Department Make Child Pornography and Molestation Arrest

(May 15, 2014)- On May 11th, 2014 Cape Coral Police Officers responded to a sex offense at a South Cape Coral home. The reporting party stated her 14 year old son, disclosed to her that Kenneth J. Dubeau W/M, DOB: 02/14/1959 had taken naked pictures of him within the last few months.

The pictures were taken at his residence,1139 NE Pine Island Ln, Cape Coral, Florida, with his cell phone and that Kenneth had also inappropriately touched his genitals.

The victim met Kenneth while attending a local religious organization.

Approximately two weeks after the victim met Kenneth, Kenneth invited him to sleep over at his house. He has slept over Kenneth's house approximately 5 times within the last few months. The last time he slept over there was approximately 3 weeks ago.

He said on numerous occasions Kenneth took pictures of him while he was naked inside his residence.

Every time Kenneth took pictures of him naked he used his cell phone. He described the cell phone as a black Smartphone with a flat front screen. For several pictures Kenneth would have him pose in different positions and utilize props.

The victim said during one of the sleepovers at Kenneth's residence he was sleeping on a mattress on the floor. While he was sleeping Kenneth got out of his bed and laid down next to him. Kenneth stuck his hand under the victim’s underwear and fondled his genitals.

On 05/13/14 a search warrant was obtained and executed on 32 NE 16th Place, Unit 5, Cape Cora, Fl. Kenneth was inside the home and during a post Miranda interview identified a black cell phone matching the aforementioned one described by the victim as his personal cellular phone.  The cellular phone was seized pursuant to the search warrant and a forensic examination was conducted.

During a digital forensic search of the suspect’s phone at least (7) seven images of the victim engaged in sexual explicit conduct were located.

Based on the totality of the evidence on 05/14/14 Kenneth was placed under arrest and charged with lewd and lascivious molestation, 7 counts sexual performance of a child 827.071(3) (production of child pornography); and 7 counts of sexual performance of a child 827.071 (5) (possession of child pornography).

Evidence developed in the investigation indicated there may be more children who were victimized by Kenneth Dubeau and the investigation is continuing.

"This case strikes at the core of everyone's sense of decency, and deals with the most vulnerable among us- our children.  Our detectives are continuing to work to identify any other victims and we ask that our partners in the media be sensitive to the fact that it may be very difficult for the families, and especially the children, to come forward.  We will provide additional information as this case unfolds, while respecting the dignity and privacy of the victims and their families."- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.

XXX

Sky Nelson- 3rd Grade, Pelican Elementary

Sky is a very hard worker and her determination during the FCAT was outstanding.   Her Resource Teacher who administered the test to students who receive accommodation of extra time said that during the FCAT Sky never gave up and that she maintained a positive attitude during the 4 days of testing.  Sky used her time wisely and checked her work again and again.    Her Resource Teacher states that she is one determined little girl and is very proud of her efforts to always do her personal best.

Chandler (CJ) Lytle – 2nd Grade, Diplomat Elementary

While making trips to Publix and Target, CJ noticed random pieces of trash in the parking lot and asked to pick it up and throw it in the trash cans.  His dad asked him why he wanted to pick up dirty trash and he stated, "I want to keep the environment clean".  When CJ and his dad went fishing around the canals, CJ dropped the fishing pole and grabbed the net and pointed out several pieces of trash.  Using his net to "fish" out anything from bottles, mulch bags to coolers, CJ filled the boat with garbage that was unhealthy for the environment.  All the time stating that he wants to keep his community clean.  CJ and his dad continued to remove trash from the canals for several more fishing trips and most likely will in the trips to come.

Ashley Castro – 8th Grade, Caloosa Middle

One night around 11pm, Ashley and her mother were driving near the Midpoint Bridge.  Ashley spotted a 9 year old girl walking.  Ashley asked her mom to stop and then she got out of the car to speak to the girl.  Ashley convinced here to get in the car after the girl told Ashley she was running away from home.  Ashley relayed this to her mother, who doesn’t speak English.  Ashley’s mother drove the girl to the police station and thus to safety.  If it were not for Ashley’s quick action, this young girl’s future would have turned out quite differently.

Reed Verblaauw – 1st Grade, Gulf Elementary

For Reed’s 7th birthday party, he requested his guest bring food and supplies for the animals at the local shelter instead of presents for himself.   A few days later Reed gathered up his presents and he and his friends delivered the supplies to the Animal Rescue Center in North Fort Myers.  It takes a special child to give up the opportunity to receive birthday gifts to help others in need.  Reed is one remarkable young man.

Zane Thomas – 3rd Grade, Pelican Elementary

Zane is an all around great kid.   His Resource Teacher had this to say about him.   He is sweet, considerate, funny and a hard worker.    He is also thoughtful and kind and is always willing to help others.  For a 10 year old student, Zane displays the maturity and desire to do well of students much older than himself.    He will continue to stay focused in school and will become a successful young man.

Bryan Calderon- 2nd Grade, Gulf Elementary

Bryan is a respectful and thoughtful child.  He does things without thinking of what he might get in return.  During Field Day at school, Bryan went up to his teacher and told her that she looked hot and asked if he could buy her an icee.  Once she ate the icee he proceeded to ask if she felt better.   Later that same day, he asked the teacher once again if he could buy her a gatorade because she looked thirsty.  The teacher was overwhelmed with Bryan’s concern for her.  In this day and time with so much negativity and disrespect,  Bryan’s selfless acts should be commended.  Bryan is like this with his classmates as well.  He works hard in class.  He is always asking if he is doing something correctly and will seek help if he needs it.  Bryan always wants to do a good job with his studies.

Evie Serrano – 2nd Grade, Gulf Elementary

Evie is a sweet girl who always looks out for others.  She is always willing to help anyone and is very encouraging to  other students.

Savanah Gonzales-2nd Grade, Gulf Elementary

Savanah is very encourangeing to all her classmates.  She is the first to tell someone what a good job they did no matter what it is.  Even if Savanah doesn’t do as well she’ll still compliment her peers.  Savanah is also helpful in the classroom without expecting anything in return.

Gabriel Moreira -2nd Grade, Gulf Elementary

Gabriel is very encouraging to his classmates when they are having difficulty.  He helps them feel better about themselves by telling them they have tried hard and have done a good job.  He also helps out in a first grade classroom in the morning to help with academics.

Sascha Kurth-11h Grade, Oasis High School

Sascha is a very good student at Oasis High School.  His graphics arts teacher recommended Sascha to help out with a graphics art project for the Cape Coral Police Department. Sgt. Kolak wanted to create a shield logo for the training division and picture border artwork was needed for a joint project between the American Cancer Society and CCPD. Sascha was recommended for the project by his teacher not only because he was very talented but because of his positive disposition to help others.

In spite of his busy, demanding school schedule, Sascha worked tirelessly until he came up with the perfect shield and border artwork. Numerous changes and alterations were requested of the original design, but Sascha completed the entire project on his spare time without hesitation.  Sascha proved he not only has outstanding work ethics but a true desire to help others without self interest.

David Nee- 3rd Grade, Cape Elementary
Nathaniel Miller – 3rd Grade, Cape Elementary

In March of 2014, David and Nathaniel witnessed a classmate being called names by another student. His classmate tried to walk away, but the other student followed, and continued to call him names. Instead of watching this happen, David and Nathaniel took action and stood up to the student.  Both David and Nathaniel stood beside their classmate and told the name caller not to "call him a nerd again." The student walked away, leaving David, Nathaniel and his classmates alone. Both these young men actions are a shining example of what we teach our kids to do in situations like this.

Katie Blackwell – 2nd Grade, Pelican Elementary

Katie was being bothered by a bully at school. She dealt with the situation with courage and poise. She decided to talk to the bully face to face.  Although her mother offered to go with Katie to school to confront the bully, Katie told her mom no, and that she could do this on her own.  Katie approached the bully one morning before school began and said, “Why are you so mean to me?” the bully apologized and said she wasn’t trying to be mean. Although Katie went to school that day nervous and uncomfortable she came back home smiling like a star. She was so proud of herself for confronting an uncomfortable situation. She said to her mom that she was nervous and even sweating but it was something she had to do on her own.

Spice- Not Just For The Kitchen Anymore

(May 21, 2014)-  On May 20, 2014, Cape Coral Police Detectives served a search warrant at a South Cape Coral home, disrupting an operation that was dealing "Spice" or synthetic marijuana.

This was the culmination of several complaints from concerned citizens about suspicious activity at this residence.  Complaints led to Cape Coral Police Department Vice Intelligence and Narcotics (VIN) Detectives conducting surveillance and then an undercover buy operation.

At around 3:40 PM, Cape Coral Police Department Vice Intelligence and Narcotics (VIN) Detectives, with the assistance of K9, and Patrol, served a search warrant at 432 SE 23rd Terrace, Cape Coral.

The resident, Mohammad Kadir, W/M, DOB:05-01-1980, was arrested, based on probable cause that had been developed, for the Possession and Sale of Synthetic Marijuana, the Use of a 2-way Wireless Communication Device to Facilitate a Felony, and Child Neglect Without Great Bodily Harm (conducting drug transactions with a child in the home).

Kadir provided a post-Miranda confession to Detectives that he had been selling synthetic marijuana for about the past month.

Detectives executed the search warrant of the premises and vehicles at this location and located the following:

  • 221 bags of synthetic marijuana (5.19 lbs.).
  • $14,149.00 in US currency (proceeds form the sale of synthetic marijuana according to Kadir).

The Cape Coral Police Department Awards Committee and the Chief of Police bestowed two Lifesaving Awards to Officer Cristian Munoz-Luna, who on two separate calls for service [in the same day], performed Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), on two victims, who went into cardiac arrest, and was able to revive them.

On April 5, 2014, Officer Munoz-Luna was investigating a theft at the Wal-Mart, located at 1619 Del Prado Boulevard, and had the female suspect in his back seat. Officer Munoz-Luna
realized that the female was not responding to his questions and saw that she had
passed out, was unresponsive, and discovered she had no pulse. Officer Munoz-Luna
quickly removed her from his vehicle, called for medics, and started CPR until he was
able to revive her. The paramedic on the scene stated that the female went into cardiac arrest and if not for Officer Munoz-Luna's quick action she would have died.

Later that evening, Officer Munoz-Luna responded to a possible overdose that occurred in the parking lot at the 1400 block of Viscaya Parkway. The male victim injected himself with heroin, became unresponsive, and stopped breathing. When Officer Munoz-Luna arrived on scene, the male was unconscious and did not have a pulse. Officer Munoz-Luna performed CPR until the male was revived and started breathing on his own. The male was taken to the Cape Coral ER where he made a full recovery.

The Lifesaving Award is awarded to a member of the Department that is responsible for saving a human life.  This voluntary action may be from the rescue of a person from drowning, fire, hazardous material incident, medical emergency, trauma, or other peril.

Officer Munoz-Luna will be presented with a certificate and ribbon for his dress uniform at a future ceremony.

"Both these situations were very stressful but Officer Munoz-Luna never wavered, and because of his fast response and quick actions, he was able to save both victims from imminent peril."- Sgt. John Lanza, Patrol Bureau.

Cape Coral to Host Military Training Operation in the Northwest

(May 26, 2014)-  It may look like a scene out of Red Dawn, but it is not an invasion.

The City of Cape Coral will be hosting another military training exercise on June 14, 2014 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM in and around Crystal Lake, located at NW 35 Lane and Caloosa Parkway.

This operation, called "helocasting," will train soldiers to safely dismount from a helicopter that is in-flight, into a body of water, while wearing all of their gear.

Throughout the day, there will be Army Blackhawk helicopters loading soldiers at a nearby landing zone and dropping them off in Crystal Lake.

Cape Coral Police Department, Cape Coral Fire Department, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the US Army will have vehicles and personnel in the air, on the ground, and in the water, directing traffic and maintaining a safe training environment for our soldiers.

"The operation is taking place in a sparsely populated area of the city away from major thoroughfares, so we anticipate traffic will not be much of a problem.  This exercise should provide a very interesting show for local residents in the area."- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer

(May 27, 2014)-  Last night at around 8:30 PM, Officer Kortright of the Cape Coral Police Department Patrol Bureau conducted a traffic stop for a moving violation near Palm Tree Boulevard and Cape Coral Parkway E..

Observing suspicious behaviors by both occupants of the car, Officer Kortright asked for a K9 to assist.  When Officers had the vehicle occupants step out, the passenger, Benitez, tried to surreptitiously drop a syringe on the ground.  Both were immediately detained for a narcotics investigation.  A K9 conducted an open air sniff of the car and alerted to the presence of narcotics.

The vehicle and occupants were searched and martinez was found to be in possession of an unopened package of Suboxone Sublingual film and a small bag containing a broken pill. Martinez advised Officers that it was Methadone. Officers also located a bag containing 31 small clear plastic bags containing a white powdery substance. The powder was field tested and tested positive for Heroin.

Benitez admitted, post-Miranda, that the drugs located on Martinez's person belonged to him and that he gave them to her to hide during the traffic stop.  Benitez also admitted to having a prior arrest for trafficking in cocaine and he did not want his girlfriend to go to jail.

Both Benitez and Martinez were transported to CCPD. The Heroin was weighed and had a pre-packaged weight of 4.6 grams.  The Suboxone Sublingual Film packet had a pre-packaged weight of 0.9 grams. Cape Coral Police Make Arrest in July Fatality Crash

Siddons turned himself in to the Cape Coral Police Department in reference to a fatal traffic crash that occurred on July 14, 2013 (CR# 13-011150).  Siddons was the driver of a blue 2006 Volvo that rear-ended an orange Taoi motorcycle at a high rate of speed in the intersection of SE 12th Terrace and Del Prado Boulevard back on July 14, 2013 at around 9:27 PM.  The driver of the motorcycle, Julio Triguero, died as a result of his injuries at Lee Memorial Hospital.  He was not wearing a helmet.  Siddons was charged with the following:

  • DUI Manslaughter
  • Vehicular Homicide
  • DUI

Blood results showed that Siddons had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.116 and 0.115 at the time of the traffic crash.  Siddons was also estimated to have been traveling in excess of 100 mph on Del Prado Boulevard.

"Fatality crashes such as this are treated as and investigated like a homicide that occurs on the roadway.  Our Traffic Homicide Investigators are meticulous and thorough in building these cases before an arrest is made, which can lead to a delay between the date that the crash occurred and the date an arrest is made.  Our thoughts are with the family of Mr. Triguero.  Hopefully, today's arrest helps them begin to close this tragic and painful chapter in their lives."- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.
