Cape Police Catch Boat Burglars

(April 18, 2014)-  Overnight, Cape Coral Police Officers responded to a call of a theft in progress at 141 SE 40th Street.  The victim stated that two males had taken a motor off of his boat that was docked in the canal behind his home and witnessed the males fleeing southbound down the canal in small aluminum boats leaving the area behind his residence.

Based on the detailed description of the suspect boats given by the victim, one Officer (Officer Brian Gumm) remembered seeing a boat and persons matching that description while patrolling the Cape Coral Yacht Club earlier.

Officers responded to the area and quickly located vehicles leaving the area of the Cape Coral Yacht Club, each pulling small boats that matched the provided descriptions.  Investigatory traffic stops were made on both vehicles pulling the suspect boats.  Each vehicle contained a stolen boat motor from two separate victims. Post-Miranda, confessions were obtained from both suspects.

A second victim was located and identified by Officer Justin DeRosso at 411 SE 32nd Street.  Victims later drove to the scenes of the traffic stops and identified their stolen property.  The stolen boat motors were later returned to the victims after digital photos were taken.  Cape Coral Police Department Property Crimes Detectives were advised and Detective Toleman responded to the scene.  Evidence Tech Fenske also responded.

"Quick action by an observant citizen, coupled with sound patrol and investigative work resulted in a quick apprehension and property being returned to its rightful owners.  This was textbook police work."- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.

Cape Coral Police Department to Host "Coffee With a Cop" at
Starbucks, 1860 NE Pine Island Rd,
on Tuesday, May 6, 2014

(April 18, 2014)-  CAPE CORAL, FL—On May 6, 2014, officers from the Cape Coral Police Department and community members will come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee.

All community members are invited to attend. The event begins at 8:00 AM on May 6, 2014 at Starbucks located at 1860 NE Pine island Rd. and runs until 10:00 AM.  Please contact Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer with questions: (239) 242-3341.

Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the Department’s work in Cape Coral’s neighborhoods.

The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies, or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community, and some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.

“We are hoping to build on the tremendous success of our first “Coffee With a Cop” event we held in January and bring this event to a new location to talk with different folks about whatever is on their minds…and drink coffee.”- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.

Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the country, as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve.

Argument Turns Violent; Results in Perimeter and Arrest

(April 21, 2014)-  If you live in northwest Cape Coral, you probably saw a lot of police activity this weekend.  Officers responded to 2829 NW 19 Avenue on a disturbance call.  When officers arrived, the victim advised that guests of his home may have stolen items while staying there.

During a heated confrontation over the missing property, Koehn armed himself with a knife, and swung it at the home owner. Fortunately, the knife missed its intended target.  During this confrontation, Koehn was disarmed by another person at the location.

As Officers arrived, Koehn fled the police, on foot, into the Zemel property.  He then entered the Gator Slough, in an attempt to "out swim" Officers, to no avail. Undaunted, Koehn refused to surrender and attempted to hide under thick brush, partially submerged in water.  A perimeter was held until K-9 units coordinated, entered, and made an apprehension in the brush.

Koehn’s backpack is missing, possibly in the water at his point of entry. Follow up to locate back pack & possibly charge for the theft to follow, so expect additional police activity in the Gator Slough area today.

ARRESTED:  Arrested- Shawn M. Koehn, W/M, DOB: 02-25-1988, Homeless.

CHARGES:  Aggravated Assault, Resisting an Officer Without Violence.

Cape Coral Police Department Needs Your Help Locating a Missing Endangered Adult

(April 23, 2014)- This afternoon, Cape Coral Police, Cape Coral Fire Department, and LCSO Aviation responded to a possible  drowning call that eventually turned into a missing/endangered person call at 924 Mohawk Parkway, Cape Coral, FL.

Erik Sanchez, W/M, DOB: 07-28-1994, of 18092 Constitution Cir., Fort Myers, FL 33901 was hanging out with a friend at 4513 SW 8th Place, Cape Coral, when Sanchez started telling his friend that he wanted to die.  When the friend went to use the restroom, Sanchez ran on foot from the home.  The friend saw Sanchez on the canal bank west of 924 Mohawk Pkwy.  When he attempted to talk to Sanchez, Sanchez jumped into the canal, and started walking out into the water.   The friend stated he jumped in after Sanchez, but Sanchez dove down under water and the friend never saw Sanchez come back up to the surface.

Cape Coral Fire Department arrived on scene and coordinated a full search and rescue operation in the canal.  Cape Coral Police conducted a full perimeter search to include a K9 track, helicopter, and several ground crews.  After approximately 3 hours, the search was called off by both fire and police command.

A witness at 931 Mohawk Pkwy did confirm that a male she saw running through her yard was Erik Sanchez after being shown a photo.  Before she saw the photo, she described the male as hispanic, around 5`9", skinny build, wearing black shorts and no shirt with a diamond in his left ear.  The witness' description was identical to the description provided by the friend, before family arrived at the scene and provided FD and PD personnel with a photo.

Sanchez has been entered as a missing/endangered person (due to his suicidal thoughts) in FCIC/NCIC.

MISSING:  Erik Sanchez, W/M, DOB: 07-28-1994, of 18092 Constitution Cir., Fort Myers, FL 33901.

Please take a look at the photo above.  If you have any information on the location of the Erik Sanchez, please contact the Cape Coral Police Department at 239-574-3223.

XXX

Jake Lutsky – 8th Grade
Challenger Middle School

Jake Lutsky is a very special child who encourages everyone around him. He assists with 6th grade students asking if they had a good day and if they stayed out of trouble.  He is a great role model and a mentor to fourth grade students at Patriot Elementary.  Jake is always willing to help out with any job no matter how big or small.  He works patiently with students who have difficulties in math and reading at Patriot Elementary and the teachers there say that they are grateful for his time and effort with those students.  He takes everything in stride & doesn't really make a big deal about things.  He doesn't seem to get stressed about any of it.  It's such a great quality about his personality.  Jake competes to do his best but not to beat others. HE TYPICALLY IS HI FIVING THE OPPOSING PLAYERS & ACTS LIKE IT'S JUST ANOTHER DAY!!

Benjamin Rivera Jr.-8th Grade
Challenger Middle

Benjamin has served as the Drum Major for the advanced percussion classes for 2 years.  He decided to learn to play a second instrument and started learning the saxophone last year. He has become one of the finest students in the Challenger Band Program. He recently was chosen, through auditions, to participate in the All County Jazz Performance.  He graciously serves as a role model and student leader by selflessly offering any help he can to other students.  He leads through academic and musical achievement and with the respect of his fellow students and teacher. He often spends hours after school practicing and tutoring.

Danyella Orjuela- 5th Grade
Pelican Elementary

Esteban Orjuela- 6th Grade
Mariner Middle

Danyella and Esteban are admirable children. They are generous with their time and are always willing to help no matter how big or small the cause may be.  For the past 5 years Danyella and Esteban have dedicated their time effortlessly to serving the community during the Thanksgiving Holiday.  It began with an invitation from a dear friend to attend the “Feed 5K” at a church in Estero. This was an all day ordeal that ended with the delivery of meals to a multitude of families throughout Cape Coral and the North Fort Myers areas. They participated in a special event where they helped to feed over five thousand families in need of a meal on Thanksgiving Day. Their first year was a little challenging, but as they continued to volunteer throughout the years they began to develop leadership skills. They initiated the tasks without needing to be told where to go. They packed over 400 containers of gravy and 200 containers of cranberry sauce. They served in the conveyor belt filling up trays with meals and even took the challenge of being servers. After a long day of food and tray preparation, the next step was to take all those trays of meals to families throughout Cape Coral and Fort Myers. This was the journey of enlightenment for both of them. This is where they learned that being “in need” did not equate with being “homeless”. It made them appreciate what they had and helped them understand the meaning of having a home for your kids and still struggle with feeding them especially during the holiday.

Guy Sapen Jr.-8th Grade
Caloosa Middle

Guy has been a role model and has taken one of the life skill students, Zach under his wing for the  school year. Both Guy and Zach were on a cross country team and are now both in track together. Guy has gone out of his way to help Zach learn the aspect of both these sports. Not only does Guy help him with these activities but Guy got to know Zach as a friend and treats him like he is no different. When guy sees Zach in the hallways he is always high fiving him and asking him how his day is going. Guy has gone out of his way to make Zach smile. Recently Zach won ribbons at a Special Olympics running event and Zach was dying to share it with Guy. With that the teacher pulled Guy out of class for about 5 minutes just so that Zach could share it with him. That moment when Zach got done letting Guy read what he had accomplished will be something the teacher will remember for for the rest of her life. Guy was so ecstatic for Zach and gave him the biggest hug and high five. Zach lit up; he knows that Guy is his friend and that he cares about him. Zach started off this year super shy and not really talking to a lot of people. Guy is one of the few people that Zach confides in and is always talking to or asking about. Guy is an amazing kid! He knows that he is making the biggest difference in Zach’s life and he makes sure to go out of his way to make Zach feel special anytime possible. Thanks to Guy, his teacher will always have a story to share with her fellow teachers about how one person can change someone’s life. Guy is an outstanding student who has been through a lot and has turned himself around and is acting selfless daily.

Jason Jans-7th Grade
Challenger Middle

Jason is an honest person. He found a large sum of money on the ground as he was entering the Gym at Challenger Middle. Many students would have considered themselves lucky and would have chosen to keep it. But Jason appeared not to think twice. He handed the teacher the money and told her that someone had dropped it and that he did not see who it was. Jason’s teacher states that she is impressed with his integrity!!

Brianna Blevins- 6th Grade
Challenger Middle

When Brianna’s kitten, Minx got his head stuck in the floor lamp Brianna was the only person home at the time.  Luckily she heard him cry and rushed to his aid.  She held him up so he wouldn’t be dangling by his head and checked to make sure he could breathe okay.  She needed to get to the phone to call her step mom, Sara.   She placed the floor lamp on its side so Minx could stand and then she raced to the phone.  When Sara arrived they both put butter around his neck to make him slippery and pulled his head through, but the kitten wasn’t budging.  Next Sara sent Brianna to the neighbor’s to get a saw to break the lamp.  When Brianna came back she held Minx still so they wouldn’t cut him, but they only got half way through because it was getting too close to Brianna’s hand to keep going.  Finally they called 9-1-1 and had to get a fireman to pull her freighted kitten free.

Cape Police Conducting Death Investigation; Recover Body From Canal

(April 25, 2014)-  Cape Coral Police Detectives are working a death investigation today after workers at a SW Cape Coral home found a body in a canal.

At around 11:20 AM, Cape Coral Police, Fire and EMS units responded on a possible drowning at 933 SW 40th Terrace, Cape Coral.  Workers at the home found a person, floating face-down in the water near a seawall.  The subject appeared to have been in the water for some time and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The body has been taken by the Medical Examiner to determine cause of death and identify the subject.  While Detectives are working this case, it is not believed that there is any danger to the public at-large.

No additional information is being released at this time until a positive identification can be made and next-of-kin can be notified.

"While many are wanting to draw a connection to this investigation and the missing person investigation from earlier in the week, it is entirely too early to do so.  Making conclusions prematurely does a disservice to the investigations and to the families of all involved.  When we have the information, we will make it available as soon as possible."- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer

Cape Coral Police Department Arrests Officer

(April 30, 2014)-  On April 30, 2014, Detectives with the Cape Coral Police Department arrested Casey M. Ortiz, 34 YOA, on a warrant charging 2 counts of Unlawful Sexual Activity with a Certain Minor – FSS 794.05.  Ortiz has been a Police Officer with the Cape Coral Police Department since 01/09/2006.

This investigation began on February 02, 2014, when the parents of the victim contacted the Cape Coral Police Department to file a report alleging that that their daughter, who was 16 at the time, had engaged in sexual activity with an unknown Cape Coral Police Officer. This was immediately assigned to a Detective to thoroughly investigate.

As with other cases of this nature, the Cape Coral Police Department worked closely with the Child Protection Team as well as the State Attorney’s Office. The victim was interviewed at CPT on February 4, 2014.  Based on the information gathered during the interview, Ortiz was identified as the Officer involved.  Subsequently, Ortiz was relieved of duty.

On February 11, 2014, Detectives executed a search warrant at the home of Ortiz.  Ortiz, who was at the Cape Coral Police Department at that time, was also served with a body warrant at the station.

In addition, during the investigation, warrants were obtained for Ortiz’s cellphone to corroborate details provided by the victim.

On March 20, 2014, Cape Coral Police Detectives completed their investigation and submitted a warrant request to the SAO.

On April 30, 2014, the warrant was approved by Judge Maria Gonzalez.  At 11:00 AM, Ortiz was contacted by Detectives and he came to the Cape Coral Police Department where he turned himself in to Detectives.

Ortiz was transported to Lee County Jail in apparent good health.

Once the criminal case is concluded, the Cape Coral Police Department will conduct its own Internal Affairs investigation, per policy and state statute.

"As we report today that one of our own was arrested for breaking the law by victimizing a member of our community, I stress that these types of cases are rare and should  not reflect negatively on the men and women who protect and serve our citizens on a daily basis.  This investigation was initiated by the Cape Coral Police Department, and immediate action was taken to ensure Mr. Ortiz was removed from duty.  The incident has been thoroughly and properly investigated, and Mr. Ortiz was placed under arrest.  We will continue to work with the State Attorney’s Office, the victim, and the victim’s family to ensure justice is served and closure for all."- Bart Connelly, Chief of Police.

ARRESTED:  Casey M. Ortiz, W/M, 34 YOA, of Cape Coral, FL
CHARGES:  Unlawful Sexual Activity with a Certain Minor – FSS 794.05 (two counts)

The case has now been turned over to the State Attorney's Office.  To protect the sanctity of the criminal case and any potential future internal investigations, the Cape Coral Police Department will have to refer any additional requests regarding this case to the SAO.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

(April 23, 2014)-  The City of Cape Coral Police Department reminds motorists and motorcyclists alike during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month to “share the road” in order to help prevent motorcycle crashes, deaths and injuries on Cape Coral roads.

“Motorcyclists will be out in force as the weather gets warmer, which is why May is the perfect time for Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month,” said SGT Jon Kulko. “Fatal crashes with motorcycles are on the rise, and helmet usage is on the decline. We all need to be more aware of motorcyclists in order to save lives.”

Statistics show an alarming trend: in 2012, 4,957 motorcyclists were killed in traffic crashes, a continued increase from 2010. Those deaths account for 15 percent of the total highway fatalities that year. Injured motorcyclists also increased from 81,000 in 2011 to 93,000 in 2012.

Helmet usage is also on the decline, dropping from 66 percent of motorcyclists wearing helmets in 2011 to only 60 percent in 2012. The decrease was most significant among motorcycle passengers, decreasing from 64 percent in 2011 to 46 percent in 2012. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 1,617 lives were saved in 2011 because of proper helmet usage, but another 701 lives could have been saved if helmets had been worn.

Wearing a helmet is an important way for a motorcyclist to stay safe, but we all play a part “It’s up to all motorists and motorcyclists to make our roads safer,” said SGT Jon Kulko. “All road users need to share the responsibility of keeping the roadways safe. By following road signs, obeying speed limits, and always staying focused on the road, deaths and injuries could be prevented.”

SGT Kulko offered tips to drivers on how to prevent a fatal crash with a motorcycle:

  • Though a motorcycle is a small vehicle, its operator still has all the rights of the road as any other motorist. Allow the motorcycle the full width of a lane at all times.
  • Always signal when changing lanes or merging with traffic.
  • If you see a motorcycle with a signal on, be careful: motorcycle signals are often non-canceling and could have been forgotten. Always ensure that the motorcycle is turning before proceeding.
  • Check all mirrors and blind spots for motorcycles before changing lanes or merging with traffic, especially at intersections.
  • Always allow more following distance – three to four seconds – when behind a motorcycle. This gives them more time to maneuver or stop in an emergency.
  • Never drive distracted or impaired.

“Motorcyclists must also take precautions to remain safe on the road,” added SGT Kulko.

Motorcyclists can increase their safety by following these steps:

  • Wear a DOT-compliant helmet and other protective gear.
  • Obey all traffic laws and be properly licensed.
  • Use hand and turn signals at every lane change or turn.
  • Wear brightly colored clothes and reflective tape to increase visibility.
  • Ride in the middle of the lane where you will be more visible to drivers.
  • Never ride distracted or impaired.
  •

“By following basic safety rules, we can all help prevent crashes,” concluded SGT Jon Kulko. “Our message is for all drivers and riders: Share the responsibility of keeping our roads safe—always share the road.”
