26 Years Later, Detectives Still Looking for a Killer

$

(May 10, 2016)- Today marks the 26th anniversary of the brutal murders of 11 year old Robin Cornell and 32 year old Lisa Story. The two were killed in their apartment in Cape Coral in the early morning hours of May 10, 1990.

Jan Cornell was at her boyfriend's home on the evening of May 9, 1990, watching television when she fell asleep. She awoke and went home to discover that her daughter and roommate had been killed inside of the apartment.

Since that day, Cape Coral Police Detectives have been investigating the case. In the 26 years that have followed, many detectives have worked on the murders. By definition, the Cornell-Story Investigation is a "Cold Case." However the attention and dedication given to solving the horrific crime is anything but cold.

Once again, the Cape Coral Police Department is putting this case out in front, in hopes of generating leads that will lead to the arrest of a killer.

Detective Christy Jo Ellis, a 25-year veteran of the Cape Coral Police Department, has been working the Cornell/Story case for the last several years.

Detectives maintain a close relationship with Jan Cornell. Ellis and Cornell speak routinely about the case. "It is a tremendous advantage having Jan available on speed dial. She is an active participant in this investigation. She is able to recall people from that time and help put pieces of evidence into context," said Ellis regarding her relationship with Jan Cornell.

This week, the Cape Coral Police Department, thanks to a generous donation from Lamar advertising, will be running billboards featuring this case.  Additionally, the department will be running a paid ad-campaign on social media.  The hope is to reach people across SW Florida and beyond to get the one lead that will give investigators the break in this case they've been looking for the past 26 years.

Detective Ellis and her partner, Detective Kurt Grau are actively working this case and they need your help. Any information may be the key to finding a killer. If you have any information on the identity of the suspect, please contact the Cape Coral Police Department at 239-574-3223. You can also submit an anonymous tip. Go to www.capecops.com/tips or text a tip- text CCPD+"Your Message" to CRIMES (274637). Finally, you can call Crimestoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS.

(May 17, 2016)- A DUI crash investigation escalated into something entirely different when the suspect escaped custody, stole a vehicle, and led police on a chase that ended in a serious crash.

During a two-car traffic crash at 4600 of Santa Barbara Boulevard, the at fault driver, David Fernandes, showed signs of impairment and was knowingly driving on a suspended license.  Fernandez was arrested for the suspended license.

During the crash investigation, Fernandes managed to escape custody and immediately got into a Police Volunteer Unit (PVU) vehicle that was parked, running, at the scene near the patrol car. The Police Volunteer ran over and tried to stop Fernandes, but was knocked to the ground.

Officers at the scene immediately called out the information over the radio and followed Fernandes in their patrol vehicles down Santa Barbara Boulevard to Cape Coral Parkway where Fernandes turned westbound on Cape Coral Parkway at a high rate of speed and refused to stop. Fernandes eventually crashed the PVU vehicle into a concrete pole at SW 25th Place and Cape Coral Parkway West.

Fernandez sustained serious injuries in the crash injuries and was trauma alerted to a local hospital where he was admitted. Investigation revealed that Fernandes had a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) over .08. Major Crash Investigator Satterlee and Sergeant O’Grady responded to assist with the traffic crash investigation. A Ping4 alert was issued for the roadway being blocked off due to the crash. Forensics personnel processed the scene and the Investigative Services Bureau was notified.

Fernandes is currently being watched by an officer at a local hospital until he is discharged.

###

Francesca Fasciano – 8th Grade, Challenger Middle

Caleb Leisure-10th Grade, Ida Baker H.S.
During lunch Caleb noticed that two students were arguing.  Instead of letting it continue, he jumped in and helped defuse the situation. Caleb didn’t worry about himself or what his peers might think of him, he just did what was right.

Sarah Schultz-8th Grade, Trafalgar Middle
Sarah is an immensely kind person who is always thinking of others.  When told about an upcoming field trip that would cost $110.00 she worried that some classmates might not be able to go.  The next day Sarah brought in $220.00 of her own money to pay for two students who otherwise could not afford it.

Jessica Peterson – 6th Grade, Diplomat Middle

Samantha Artym- 4th Grade, Caloosa Elementary

Yvette Justice-6th Grade, Caloosa Middle
Yvette notified school administrators and the SRO about a potentially dangerous situation on campus.  Administrators and the SRO were able to intervene in order to ensure the safety of all students.  This would not have been possible if Yvette had not chosen to do the right thing and tell an adult.

Gabriel Sayer- 8th Grade, Mariner Middle
Gabriel came up with the idea to collect stuffed animals for our first responders to give to children when they go on a call.   Gabriel went to the owner of the Palace Roller Rink, Inc. in North Fort Myers to help him set up a drive.  He collected 137 stuffed animals of which 62 went to CCPD.

Kennisa Brown- 2nd Grade, Christa McAuliffe Elementary
Charlotte Williams- 2nd Grade, Christa McAuliffe Elementary
Kennisa and Charlotte found money in a Ziploc bag.  On their way to turn the money in they saw a teacher comforting a student who seemed upset.  It turned out the money that they found belonged to that student.

Jacob Meyers- 7th Grade, Oasis Middle
Jacob volunteers at the Oasis Elementary school office every day for an hour assisting the staff with anything they need.  Jacob is able to work independently and is a role model for others.

Noah Haught- 5th Grade, Pelican Elementary
Noah’s friend was being bullied and because of it, he told Noah and his other friends via text that he wanted to harm himself. Upon seeing the text, Noah expressed concern to his grandmother who notified school officials.  Because Noah chose to get involved, his friend is now getting the help that he needs.

Ashley Gonzalez- 5th Grade, Hector Cafferata Jr. Elementary
Ashley called 9-1-1 when her mom was having abdominal pains.  When the first responders arrived at her home, Ashley acted as an interpreter for her mother.  She remained calm during the entire incident and was able to relay appropriate information between her mom and the first responders.

(May 27, 2016)- About 200 people from the community gathered to give Chief Bart Connelly a fantastic send-off to mark the conclusion of his 28-year career with the Cape Coral Police Department Wednesday afternoon.

The ceremony, held at the Cape Coral Yacht Club, was full of speeches and presentations from United States Secret Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Lee County Sheriff's Office, Southwest Florida Police Chiefs Association, Cape Coral Fire Chief, Cape Coral Mayor and City Manager, and Chief Connelly's wife.

Attendees included numerous community and business leaders, residents, City Managers from around SW Florida, Cape City Council members, City staff, Cape Coral Police Officers and volunteers, former and current police chiefs, local, state and federal law enforcement officers, US and State prosecutors, family and friends.

City manager John Szerlag said, "I've been a manager for a long time...and I've made thousands, if not tens of thousands of decisions.  One of the best decisions I've ever made was to promote you [Chief Connelly] to Police Chief."

FBI Senior Resident Agent in Charge James Rankin said of Chief Connelly, "Under Bart's leadership we've had an amazing partnership.  Whether we are talking about an act of terrorism or a violent crime...I'm very, very fortunate to have that."

Rounding out the ceremony, Chief Connelly addressed the assembled crowd.  In his speech, Chief Connelly credited the department’s success to its members, both sworn and non-sworn and praised City leadership for supporting public safety and keeping the safety of the community priority.  He also challenged future Law Enforcement leaders to ensure their personnel remain safe and are not distracted in this era of increased scrutiny of law enforcement, and encouraged them to take care of their personnel and treat them fairly.

"Of the many accomplishments achieved by the agency, it is important to recognize that none of them would have been done without the hard work and dedication of its members. I cannot express how much I respect them all for their professionalism, innovation, and dedication to the citizens they serve. Our long-standing status as one of the safest cities its size in Florida, is directly attributable to their work and the efforts of our citizenry.  The future leadership of the organization is strong through experience and training and support from the FBI National Academy, Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Police Executive Research Forum,  International Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Florida Police Chief’s Association, " Bart Connelly, Chief of Police.

Chief Connelly plans to get back into the workforce after a short break to spend time with family.

Chief Bart Connelly is the eighth law enforcement professional to hold the title of Chief of Police at the Cape Coral Police Department.  Chief Connelly holds an Associate of Science in Criminal Justice from Edison College, a Bachelor of Liberal Studies from Barry University, and a Master of Science in Public Administration from Central Michigan University. He is a graduate of the 240th session of the FBI National Academy, the 10th session of the Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute Senior Leadership Program and the 35th session of the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) Senior Management Institute for Police.  Bart serves on the Florida Police Chiefs Association Professional Standards Committee and is a Commissioner for the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Bart also serves on the Lee County Human Services Council and the Florida Southwestern State College Criminal Justice Advisory Board.
