Cape Coral Police SWAT Team Stands Out at Regional Competition

(September 16, 2013)- On Saturday, September 14, 2013 the Cape Coral Police Department SWAT team competed in the 11th annual Region 6 SWAT competition in Sarasota. The competition consisted of three (3) shooting events/scenarios which ranged from High Risk Warrant Service, Downed Officer and Hostage Rescue. The 4th event consisted of an extremely difficult obstacle course, a one mile run throughout heavy mud, swim and a zip line. 15 teams from the Naples to Sarasota region competed and the top 3 were (1) Sarasota Sheriff's Office, (2) Manatee Sheriff's Office and (3) Cape Coral Police Department.

The Cape Coral Police Department's SWAT Team is considered a part-time team, meaning that its members have other full-time duties within the Police Department. The top two finishers are considered full-time SWAT Teams, meaning that SWAT is their primary function at their respective departments.

"Being the only part-time team to finish in the top three is a great achievement and shows that the Cape Coral SWAT team is completely dedicated to be the best. Cape SWAT improved their times on all events compared to last year and were able to compete with the best in the business. This shows the amount of ability and professionalism that this team carries with them on a daily basis"-Sergeant Carlos Mena, SWAT Team Leader.

Cape Coral Remains One of Florida’s Safest Cities

(September 17, 2013)- The FBI released its latest crime statistics and once again, Cape Coral remains one of Florida’s safest cities. For cities over 150,000 residents, Cape Coral was ranked overall the second safest. Cape Coral was ranked as the number one safest city for violent crime, meaning that people are least likely to fall victim to a crime of violence in Cape Coral than any other large city in the state. We were also the second safest for property crime. If we can eliminate our unlocked vehicle burglaries, we’ll be on our way to number one in that category also.

(October 21, 2013)- At around 5:45 PM, Cape Coral Police, Fire, and EMS units responded to a traffic crash in the 2700 Block of SW 20th Avenue involving a pickup truck with trailer and a bicyclist.  Evidence on-scene and witness testimony indicate that the child operating the bicycle veered into the street from a vacant field, striking the trailer that the pickup truck was pulling.

The bicyclist was transported to Lee Memorial and later airlifted to the Children's Unit at Tampa General Hospital.  Cape Coral Police Department Traffic Homicide Investigator is investigating this case.  Below is the preliminary synopsis of the crash:

The driver of Vehicle 1 was trauma alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital by ambulance.  The driver of Vehicle 1, a 13 year old boy, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the traffic crash, which is required under FSS 316.2065 (under the age of 16, helmets are  required).  Alcohol/drugs were NOT a factor in this traffic crash.

Cape Coral Police Department Announces "24 hours of Twitter"

(October 28, 2013)-  On November 1, 2013, the Cape Coral Police Department will be participating in a Global Tweet-A-Thon with hundreds of police departments from all over the world.

Organized by ConnectedCops.Net, the Global Tweet-A-Thon is intended to give people a  closer look at law enforcement from all over the world, showcase the agencies that are embracing social media as a way to engage their respective communities, and to of course, have fun.

"We have a little bit of experience doing this," said Det. Sgt. Dana Coston.  "Our Tweet From The Beat events over the past couple of years have been incredibly popular and successful, and just a couple of months ago we did a joint event with Lima PD.  I think taking it to a global scale gives us an opportunity to help drive world-wide attention to all that Cape Coral has to offer, especially our world-class Police Department."  But the intention goes beyond just holding a fun event.  "By growing the community on Twitter that follows us, we are able to get information out to the public very quickly.  If we post something and a large number of our followers re-tweet or share it on other social media outlets, it helps us reach thousands of people instantly, in a way we never could before."

The Global Tweet-A-Thon will begin at 8:00 AM Friday, November 1 and run through 8:00 AM Saturday, November 2.   "24 Hours of Twitter" will be a Twitter exclusive, so residents are encouraged to go to www.twitter.com and sign up for a free account.  Once signed up, follow the Cape Coral Police Department on Twitter.  The Cape Coral Police Department Twitter name is @CapePD.  To follow along with all of the agencies participating in the Global Tweet-A-Thon, search for the hashtag #poltwt .

"We plan on taking it up a notch.  We're still going to do the virtual ride-alongs that made Tweet From the Beat so popular, and people will be able to have live Q&A throughout the day, but we have some special things in store for the citizens who participate."- Det. Sgt. Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer

December 23, 2013 will mark the Cape Coral Police Department’s 11th annual “Shop with a Cop."

After shopping, the students and officers head to the Police Department headquarters, wrap the presents and enjoy a catered lunch before being taken back home with their presents in tow.

The “Do the Right Thing” program reinforces the idea of sharing and giving and promotes the idea that role models of all ages are crucial to the development of our youth. The positive one-on-one experience each student will get from “Shop with a Cop” is one that is never forgotten.

Drivers should be vigilant- remember that kids will be out late trying to get that one last piece of candy.  Slow down- This is generally good advice, but especially in the early evening and dusk hours.  Visibility is dramatically reduced in the dusk hours and kids wearing dark-colored costumes will be more difficult to see.  By slowing down, you give yourself extra time to react.  Cape Coral Police will be out looking for traffic violations such as speeding, careless driving and DUI.  Remember grown-ups, if you are going to that Halloween party, be sure to use a designated driver.

Trick-or-treaters should also be careful. Children are always at risk because they tend to think less about traffic safety and more about the fun of the night.  That, coupled with costumes that can be hard to see make Halloween safety paramount.  Here are a few safety tips for a safe and fun halloween:

  • Children shouldn't trick-or-treat alone.  A parent or guardian should go along to supervise the fun.
  • Plan a trick-or-treat route ahead of time.  Stick to houses in your neighborhood that you know.  If venturing out beyond your neighborhood, only trick or treat at houses that are well lit.  Take advantage of "Safe Trick-Or-Treat" events in the area.
  • Cross streets only at corners.  Darting across the street in front of cars could end the Halloween festivities.
  • That dark ninja costume or Darth Vader costume looks great but is hard to see.  Carry a light source with you, like a flashlight or glow stick (Or a lightsaber if you are Darth Vader).
  • Choose costumes that don't obstruct vision.  We want trick-or-treaters looking out for cars as much as we want drivers looking gout for them.  If possible,  opt for nontoxic face paint instead of masks.  It looks great, and makes it much easier to see.
  • Finally. add reflective material to a child’s costume and adjust the length of any costume that may cause a child to trip.  It won't ruin the look of the costume and it may just save your child's life.

Cape Coral Police Make Arrest in July Fatality Crash

(October 31, 2013)-  Today at around 4:30 pm, a Cape Coral Police Department Traffic Homicide Investigator arrested William Siddons (W/M, 2-18-87) of 15893 Briar Cliff Lane, Fort Myers, Florida 33990.

Siddons turned himself in to the Cape Coral Police Department in reference to a fatal traffic crash that occurred on July 14, 2013 (CR# 13-011150).  Siddons was the driver of a blue 2006 Volvo that rear-ended an orange Taoi motorcycle at a high rate of speed in the intersection of SE 12th Terrace and Del Prado Boulevard back on July 14, 2013 at around 9:27 PM.  The driver of the motorcycle, Julio Triguero, died as a result of his injuries at Lee Memorial Hospital.  He was not wearing a helmet.  Siddons was charged with the following:

  • DUI Manslaughter
  • Vehicular Homicide
  • DUI

Blood results showed that Siddons had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.116 and 0.115 at the time of the traffic crash.  Siddons was also estimated to have been traveling in excess of 100 mph on Del Prado Boulevard.

"Fatality crashes such as this are treated as and investigated like a homicide that occurs on the roadway.  Our Traffic Homicide Investigators are meticulous and thorough in building these cases before an arrest is made, which can lead to a delay between the date that the crash occurred and the date an arrest is made.  Our thoughts are with the family of Mr. Triguero.  Hopefully, today's arrest helps them begin to close this tragic and painful chapter in their lives."- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.

Cape Coral Police Department Busts Meth Operation; Two Arrested

(November 7, 2013)-  Cape Coral Police Department Vice, Intelligence, and Narcotics (VIN) Detectives, with the assistance of the Cape Coral Police Department Street Crimes Unit (SCU) busted a meth operation in SE Cape Coral yesterday afternoon.

Based on information and intelligence gathered during their investigation, VIN and SCU obtained and served a search warrant at 1201 SE 6th Terrace on November 6, 2013 at around 4:19 PM.

Inside the residence, VIN Detectives located a clandestine methamphetamine lab inside the closet of the master bedroom.  Detectives seized chemicals, equipment, and over 30 ounces of methamphetamine.

Due to the volatile and toxic nature of the chemicals used in production of methamphetamine, a professional hazardous materials disposal company responded to safely remove and dispose of the hazardous waste.

Arrested:

  1. Christopher Travis Kilmer, W/M, DOB: 06-02-1969 of 1201 SE 6th Terrace, Cape Coral, FL.
  2. Shannon Mari Nakashima, W/F, DOB: 12-30-1980 of 1201 SE 6th Terrace, Cape Coral, FL.

 Charges:

Both Kilmer and Nakashima were charged with Production of Methamphetamine (FSS 893.13 1a1))  and Trafficking in Methamphetamine in excess of 14 grams (FSS 893.135 (1f1)). They are currently being held in Lee County Jail.

"Thanks to the hard work of our VIN and SCU Officers, another dangerous meth lab has been taken down and taken out of one of our neighborhoods.   From beginning to end- production to consumption- methamphetamine is one of the most dangerous drugs we encounter.  It destroys the lives and physical well-being of the user, and poses a significant risk to those nearby where it is being illegally manufactured."- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer

Brazen Thieves Steal Boat Lift In Broad Daylight; Attentive Neighbors Save the Day

(November 7, 2013)-  The men were arrested on charges of Grand Theft for stealing an entire boat lift in broad daylight from a SW Cape Coral home on Wednesday.

Cape Coral Police Department Patrol Units responded to 3226 SW 27th Place at around 2:38 PM.  The caller advised that there was a suspicious vehicle parked next to a vacant residence,  loading what looked to be metal into the bed of a white pickup truck. As the suspicious vehicle left the residence, the witness followed the vehicle, providing turn by turn updates to Cape Coral Police Department Communications personnel.

The responding officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle for a traffic violation.  While conducting a traffic stop a second neighbor made contact with the officer and advised that his wife was currently calling in a theft from their neighbor's home. The second witness personally knew, and made contact with, the homeowner and confirmed that no construction or maintenance personnel had been authorized to be at the residence and that no one had permission to remove the lift. He was also able to confirm that the vehicle that the officer had stopped and its occupants, were the same subjects who took the boat lift.

"This is a textbook case of partnership between the Police Department, and the citizens. Without the concerned neighbors' assistance, it is very likely that this crime would have gone undiscovered for quite sometime, allowing the suspects to get away with it. We are thankful for the attentiveness and concern shown for their neighbor by the citizens who took the time to make the call to the Cape Coral Police Department." - Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer
