(March 17, 2022) - Please join us in congratulating CCPD Officer Daniel Thomas and Officer Davis Rios on receiving the Meritorious Service Award, one of the Cape Coral Police Department’s highest honors.

From Sergeant Ryan Tronchet’s nomination:

On December 23rd, 2021, Officer Rios and DUI Officer Thomas responded to a burglary in progress in Cape Coral. The unknown suspect entered an enclosed lanai, attempted entry at the front and rear doors. The suspect was armed with a knife and stabbed one of the doors multiple times, attempting to break the glass as well as cutting the screen door. The suspect was wearing all dark clothing, a mask and armed with a knife.

Officer Rios and DUI Officer Thomas immediately responded to the residence and approached the residence without hesitation. Officers heard the suspect banging on the rear door of the victim’s residence, as they approached and confronted the armed suspect. The suspect began to take flight and officers were able to restrict the suspect’s avenue of escape and safely apprehended the suspect without incident. The vistim’s were extremely happy with our quick response and immediate action of taking the suspect into custody.

For this reason, Officer Rios and DUI Officer Thomas received the Meritorious Service Award from Chief Tony Sizemore.

Cape Coral Police Department Plans Bike Safety Enforcement Operations

$
0
0

(March 21, 2022) - Cape Coral residents are increasingly riding bicycles to commute, for exercise, or just for fun. Cape Coral Police Department wants to remind everyone that, by law, bicycles on the roadway have the same rights and responsibilities as motorized vehicles; people’s choices, whether they are on two wheels or four, can affect the lives of those around them.

During the month of March, officers will be focusing on bicycle safety. Special patrols will be deployed at those corridors of the city where bicycle traffic and crashes are most prevalent in order to discourage unsafe behaviors by enforcing Florida traffic laws. Officers will issue warnings and citations only when appropriate.

Lee County ranks in the top 25 counties in Florida for traffic crashes resulting in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists. High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) efforts such as these are a crash mitigation tool designed to deter unsafe behaviors of all road users, including motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

Cape Coral Police Department wants to remind you of the following safety tips to help save a life.

For drivers:

  • Look for bicyclists everywhere. Cyclists may not be riding where they should be or may be hard to see—especially in poorly lit conditions, including dusk/dawn/night and in poor weather.

  • Yield to bicyclists as you would motorists and do not underestimate their speed. Avoid turning in front of a bicyclist who is traveling on the road or sidewalk, often at an intersection or driveway.

  • In parking lots, at stop signs, when backing up, or when parking, search your surroundings for other vehicles, including bicycles.

  • Motorists turning right on red should look to the right and behind to avoid hitting a bicyclist approaching from the right rear. Stop completely and look left-right-left and behind before turning right on red.

  • Obey the speed limit, reduce speed for road conditions, and drive defensively to avoid a crash with a cyclist.

    For bicyclists:

  • Drive with the flow, in the same direction as traffic.

  • Obey street signs, signals, and road markings, just like a car.

  • Assume the other person doesn’t see you; look ahead for hazards or situations to avoid

that may cause you to fall—like toys, pebbles, potholes, grates, or train tracks.

  • No texting, listening to music, or using anything that distracts you by taking your eyes

and ears or your mind off the road and traffic.

  • Wear equipment to protect you and make you more visible to others, like a bike helmet,

bright clothing (during the day), reflective gear, and a white front light and red rear light and reflectors on your bike (at night, or when visibility is poor).

This is part of Cape Coral Police Department’s participation in the Florida Department of Transportation’s High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) Program aimed at educating motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians on Florida’s traffic laws to improve safety on our city’s  roads. Additional information about pedestrian and bicycle safety is available at www.alerttodayflorida.com.

(April 13, 2022) - The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Lee, Charlotte, and Hendry Counties has selected Cape Coral Police Chief Anthony Sizemore as their newest member of the Board of Directors.

NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.

NAMI Lee, Charlotte and Hendry Counties was founded in 1981 in Fort Myers, FL by a group of family members who were tired of their children bearing the burden of blame for their mental illnesses.  Unhappy with the lack of services available and the treatment of those living with mental health disorders, the family members sought out others with similar concerns.  The first meeting held to address these issues in mental health was much larger than expected, and seeking to continue the momentum, the group made the decision to join NAMI.  Recognizing the potential to make a true difference in our community by sharing NAMI’s vision and offering NAMI Signature Programs the group pursued incorporation and became an affiliate organization.

NAMI’s mission is to provide advocacy, education, support and public awareness so that all individuals and families affected by mental illness can build better lives.

“I am incredibly honored and humbled to have been selected to serve on the Board of Directors for NAMI. We have partnered with NAMI for many years to provide Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) to our officers and professional staff. With the national conversation centered around law enforcement interacting with individuals and families experiencing mental health issues, I feel that my board appointment is both timely and vital. Law enforcement will always play a critical role in the ‘Continuum of Care’…and I am excited to play a significant part in the solution.”- Chief Anthony Sizemore.

(April 18, 2022) - Please join us in congratulating CCPD Master Corporal SRO Nicholas Slover on receiving the Chief’s Special Recognition Award, one of the Cape Coral Police Department’s highest honors.

From SRO Joe Zalenski’s nomination:

Serving as a fellow Honor Guard team leader, I have had a front-row seat to the effort, care, and detail SRO Slover puts into his work.

Recently this agency has endured the loss of recently retired officers. SRO Slover has extensive experience in representing our agency for more than 10 years at many LODD funerals nationwide. He brings that experience and knowledge of protocol and solemn pageantry home with him and ensures our agency formally, but also focuses intently on the recognition and respect befitting our departed officers. His ability to convey the agency’s appreciation and sense of loss by directing the Honor Guard brings comfort to those grieving and ensures those loved ones know the CCPD grieves with them, most recently at the funerals of Captain Urarro and Officer Post.

When Chief Sizemore prioritized the CCPD Honor Guard, SRO Slover took it to heart and made sure that departed members would be properly represented and honored. He has taken upon himself the responsibility of making each funeral detail as perfect as possible to bring credit to the agency, the Honor Guard, and most importantly the service and sacrifice of our departed members.

For this reason, SRO Slover received the Chief’s Special Recognition Award from Chief Anthony Sizemore.

(April 19, 2022) - The Cape Coral Police Department will be conducting a DUI enforcement operation tomorrow, April 20th, 2022. This is part of our continuing effort to increase traffic safety awareness through education and enforcement. The mission of these operations is to help reduce traffic crashes, injuries, and deaths on our roadways in Cape Coral.

This DUI enforcement operation will be conducted by Patrol and Traffic officers. This operation will be citywide.

The primary focus of this operation will be placed on criminal violations such as DUI and reckless driving. Officers will also be focusing on moving violations such as speeding, red-light and stop sign violations, as well as aggressive driving. Visible enforcement increases awareness, encourages motorists to obey traffic laws and reduces crashes. The Cape Coral Police Department encourages you to drive courteously and reminds you to obey the rules of the road. If you are impaired, please use a designated driver, ride share app or taxi to avoid the costly fines of a DUI arrest.

***Please note that the Supreme Court ruled that law enforcement must announce to the public when the checkpoints will be conducted. The publicity is a protection of your rights; in any case, the checkpoint will do its job and keep drunk drivers off the road, either through arrest or deterrence.***
