(September 20, 2016)- The next "Do The Right Thing" ceremony for September 2016 will be held on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at 2:00pm in City Council Chambers.  This ceremony is open to the public and we encourage our community to come out and show their support to these outstanding young men and women who "did the right thing."

Nine (9) Cape Coral students will be recognized.  The winners’ nominations are after the break.

###

Frank Cornelison III, 5th Grade, Diplomat Elementary School
Frank was on his way to class when he saw a young girl near the 5th Grade Classrooms.  She looked confused and sad, so he stopped to ask her if she was okay.  It was a Kindergarten student who had taken a wrong turn on the way to class.  The child could not remember the teacher’s name as it was within the first week of school.  Frank talked to her calmly and walked her to the office.  The staff made sure she arrived safely to class.

Meledie Burgess, 8th Grade, Caloosa Middle School
While participating in the April 20th “Do The Right Thing” event, Meledie found a wallet in Council Chambers.  At the conclusion of the DTRT Ceremony Meledie took the wallet to the City Clerk’s Office.  As it turned out, a resident had lost his wallet while attending the April 4th City Council Meeting.

Kailee Hess, 7th Grade, Trafalgar Middle School
Kailee educated her Girl Scout troop about dog rescue and homeless pets.  She explained how Brooke’s Legacy came about due to a tragedy involving a local teen.  She taught the girls how to make homemade dog treats which were then donated to a local groomer who sold them and gave all of the profits to Brooke’s Legacy.

Sierra Edelstein, 8th Grade, Gulf Middle School
Sierra and her dad were shopping at Publix at Santa Barbara Blvd. in Cape Coral.  At the check-out lane, Sierra noticed a large sum of folded cash that was on the floor.  Sierra picked up the money and alerted her dad and turned it into the store manager.

Aysia (Nikki) Mompremier, 10th Grade, Mariner High School
Brock Oster – 7th Grade, Gulf Middle School

Nikki and Brock gave up time this summer to volunteer in the activities Department of the Port Charlotte Rehab Center.  Together they have given over 100 hours of their time to assist the residents.  They helped set up parties, meals and events.

Christian Ellingwood, 6th Grade, Challenger Middle School
Christian has gone out of his way to help one of the students who is hearing impaired.  This student wears hearing aids and Christian takes time each day to help make sure that he is on track and has what he needs in all of the classes they have together.   Christian has made it his mission to help this hearing impaired student have a smooth start to his middle school experience.

Angela Kerr, 8th Grade, Caloosa Middle
Angela is not only a wonderful student, but an outstanding citizen as well.  She is currently directing a play called “Eat: It’s Not About Food” at the Pine Island Methodist Church.  This play brings awareness about eating disorder and is free to the public.  It is honorable that Angela is using her strengths to bring attention to this serious issue.

Bridget Watkins, 8th Grade, Caloosa Middle
During the first week of school, Bridget found money on the floor in the 8th grade hallway.  Instead of keeping the money herself and not telling anyone, Bridget chose to do the right thing and turn the money into an administrator.

FRAUD FRIDAY: IRS Phone Scam Alert

$

(September 23, 2016)-  The Cape Coral Police Department is warning residents of yet another scam.  This time, fraudsters are posing as the IRS. Listen:

Residents in Cape Coral are getting messages such as this from fraudsters posing as the IRS, warning of impending legal action if they don't call them immediately.  The con-artists are hoping that callers will call the number and out of fear, and provide personal identifying information, banking, or credit card information to "confirm their identity" and to settle "outstanding tax bills."  The problem is, it isn't the IRS calling and if you give them the information they are asking for, you are compromised.

The Cape Coral Police Department wants to remind you that the IRS:

  • Never asks for credit card, debit card or prepaid card information over the telephone.
  • Never insists that taxpayers use a specific payment method to pay tax obligations
  • Never requests immediate payment over the telephone and will not take enforcement action immediately following a phone conversation. Taxpayers usually receive prior notification of IRS enforcement action involving IRS tax liens or levies.

Other characteristics of these scams include:

  • Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
  • Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security number.
  • Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
  • Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
  • Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
  • After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.

If you receive a call such as this, do not call the number provided.  If you have any concerns regarding your tax status, contact the IRS directly at www.irs.gov.

For more information on IRS phone scams, read the article the IRS published here:  https://www.irs.gov/uac/newsroom/phone-scams-continue-to-be-a-serious-threat-remain-on-irs-dirty-dozen-list-of-tax-scams-for-the-2016-filing-season?_ga=1.11242420.1001547519.1474647218

UPDATE: "We got him!" Cape Coral Police Announce Arrest in 1990 Cornell-Story Double Homicide

(September 28, 2016)-  Today the Cape Coral Police Department announced an arrest in one of it's oldest open homicide investigations, the 1990 double murder of Lisa Story and Robin Cornell.

On Tuesday September 27, 2016, Detective Christy Jo Ellis of the Cape Coral Police Department Major Crimes Unit, arrested Joseph Adam Zieler, W/M, DOB: 04-15-1962, for the murder and rape of Lisa Story, 32 and Robin Cornell, 11.  Detective Kurt Grau of the Cape Coral Police Department Major Crimes Unit, was able to obtain a warrant for Zieler’s arrest.  This murder occurred on May 10, 1990, at the Courtyards apartments located at 631 SE 12th Avenue, here in Cape Coral.

PHOTO:  Aerial map showing the location of the Cornell-Story homicide.  (Photo Courtesy of Apple, Inc.)

On that date, Jan Cornell left for the evening, leaving her 11 year old daughter Robin in the care of her new roommate, Lisa Story.  When Jan returned home, she heard footsteps inside her apartment and upon entering found an ironing board open with pictures of her daughter laid out.  Jan ran upstairs and saw Lisa’s lifeless body in her bed.  Jan ran to her daughter Robin’s room and found her on the floor of her room deceased.

9-1-1 was called and Cape Coral Police responded to the scene.  The investigation revealed that Robin and Lisa were suffocated and sexually assaulted, the apartment was ransacked, and items were taken.

The largest murder investigation in the history of Cape Coral began that day.  That investigation  continued for the last 26 years.   Numerous items of evidence were seized during the initial investigation including several items found to have DNA not belonging to the victims.  In the late 1990s, when new DNA technology became available, the evidence was re-tested and a DNA profile was obtained that was entered into the CODIS system.  CODIS is a national database containing the DNA from unsolved violent crimes.

On August 27, 2016, Joseph Zieler of N. Ft. Myers was arrested for aggravated battery against his son.  Under a 2009 law, all persons in Florida arrested for a felony will have their DNA taken and compared to CODIS.  The Lee County Jail took Zieler’s DNA and FDLE obtained a match to evidence from the Murders of Robin Cornell and Lisa Story.  Follow up investigation by the CCPD Major Crimes Unit confirmed the DNA match and disclosed further evidence of Zieler’s guilt.

"The successful conclusion to this case is a credit everyone in the Cape Coral Police Department from 1990 to today.  The original crime scene and investigation were professionally worked and well documented.  Follow up investigation, including the submission of hundreds of DNA samples for comparison, was aggressively pursued.  The Cape Coral Police Department Property and Evidence unit preserved all evidence and its chain of custody, then constantly updated testing of evidence as new techniques became available," Acting Captain Christopher Ellis, Investigative Services Bureau.

"This arrest is the culmination of 26 years of work, spanning more than half of the entire history of this police department.  This arrest closes one of the oldest homicides in Cape Coral history.  I want to personally thank the investigators, past and present, for their meticulous work, their dedication, their professionalism, and their belief that this case would eventually be solved," Chief Dave Newlan.

The Cape Coral Police Department held a news conference today at noon to announce the arrest to the public.  Watch below:

ARRESTED: Joseph Adam Zieler W/M, DOB: 04-15-1962, of North Fort Myers, FL. CHARGES: Burglary (with an assault or a homicide), Sexual Battery (x2), First Degree Murder (x2)

The Cape Coral Police Department Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) tied for 4th place with Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, in what was the first Crisis Negotiation Team competition in the history of the Cape Coral Police Department.

The agencies involved in the competition were as follows:

  • Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office
  • Cape Coral Police Department
  • Clearwater PD
  • Largo PD
  • MacDill AFB Security Forces
  • Jacksonville Sheriff's Office
  • Pinellas County Sheriff's Office
  • Pinellas Park PD
  • Tampa PD
  • Marion County Sheriff's Office
  • Polk County Sheriff's Office

Day 1 consisted of a seminar with guest speakers the entire day to include a SWAT team leader from Dallas PD, who was involved in their recent tragedy.

Day 2 consisted of a 6 hour scenario with 2 judges in the room at all times.  There were no breaks and it was as realistic as possible. Each team was allowed to utilize 6 team members.  Each team had the same scenario with a separate role player.  "The scenario was very realistic.  Intel gathering was done electronically, live interviews, canvassing, etc....It was the real deal," said Detective Mike McIlhargey of the Cape Coral Police Department CNT.

"The men and women of the CNT are unsung heroes of many major incidents.  People always see the SWAT team and vehicles, but often are unaware of the behind-the-scenes-work our Negotiators are doing to help bring many of these situations to a peaceful resolution. We are very proud of the team's showing," Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.

(October 9, 2016)-  Cape Coral Police Department made an arrest in an injury crash that shut down Veterans Memorial Parkway for a couple of hours last night.

Last night, officers responded to multiple traffic crashes at the 500 block of Veterans Parkway W.

The investigation revealed that Michael Lowry, 26,  was driving westbound on Veterans Parkway when another driver struck his vehicle but would not stop. Lowry followed after the vehicle in an attempt to get the other driver to stop. According to several witnesses, Lowry passed them at a high rate of speed, left his lane of travel and struck the other vehicle which caused the vehicle to flip over.

Two other vehicles that were approaching the crash had to brake quickly, causing them to get into a traffic crash. The driver that originally hit Lowry’s vehicle was a juvenile on a Learners Permit DL. The juvenile was taken to the Cape Coral ER with a laceration on his head that required stitches.  The juvenile was cited for the first accident.

It was determined that Lowry was driving recklessly, resulting in serious bodily injury to a person.  He was arrested and transported to the Lee County Jail.

The roadway was shut down for over 2 hours as crash investigations and road clearing took place.  A Ping4 alert was sent, warning drivers and residents in the area.
