Community Makes Cape Coral Police Department Fill the Boat Toy Drive a Huge Success

(December 22, 2015)-  As you saw from our posts on social media yesterday, the Cape Coral Police Department got the chance to brighten the Holidays of about 40 families during our 13th Annual Shop With a Cop.  Over the next couple of days, we get to continue making a difference in the lives of Cape Coral families, thanks to what we accomplished during our 9th Annual Fill the Boat toy Drive that happened over the weekend.

This year, we thought our efforts might fall short.  Typically, Fill the Boat is a 3-day event.  This year, due to inclement weather on Friday, it was cut to only two days.  However beautiful weather on Saturday and Sunday brought out the people and the community really stepped up to the plate.

“We had a really good day on Saturday.  We were really happy to se what people were willing to give to make a difference for kids.  On Sunday, people doubled what they gave on Saturday!  We had people running after us as we were breaking down the display, giving us last-minute donations of toys or money.  We were blown away.”- Corporal Kelvin Thompkins, Cape Coral Police Department District Resource Coordinator.

Donations poured in from individuals and business all over Cape Coral and Southwest Florida.  The wife of of our officers reached out to several Dollar General stores in the area.  The managers of these stores (MacGregor Blvd., Chiquita Blvd., Skyline Blvd., andSan Carlos Blvd.) heeded the call, setting up collection bins in their stores and making donations themselves.

“The community has overwhelmed us…and our Patrol office, with its generosity.”- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.  The video below shows what a portion of the donations looks like after it was unloaded, sorted, and prepped for packaging and wrapping:

Over the next couple of days, Cape Coral Police Department personnel and volunteers will be making visits to families in need, bringing holiday cheer.  “The caring that people showed us and the outpouring of support to make Fill The Boat a success was truly humbling.”- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.

(December 22, 2015)- Citizens on social media helped Cape Coral Police apprehend a group of car thieves and burglars over the weekend.

The victim reported to the Cape Coral Police Department that his Ford F250 pick-up stolen last Thursday.  The victim then proceeded to put the information on Facebook, in hopes of getting the word out about their truck and to assist the Cape Coral Police Department in recovering it. A Facebook acquaintance spotted the truck Saturday morning at a 7-11 and proceeded to take pictures of the four black male occupants while he contacted CCPD. He also sent the pictures to the victim.

Prior to Officers arriving in the area, the vehicle left the area and could not be located. The victim also proceeded to look for his vehicle. Two hours later he spotted two of the black males that were in his vehicle earlier, walking out of South Industrial Park, and he notified the Cape Coral Police Department. When Officers arrived, they detained McLaughlin and Collins who were standing near a Toyota Solara that had also been reported stolen.

While this was transpiring, a citizen called in a suspicious pick-up in the 1600 block of Del Prado Blvd., which turned out to be the stolen Ford F250. Officer I. Romero and K-9 Officer R. Reese conducted a high-risk stop on the vehicle. All occupants exited the pick-up at the same time. Davis did not listen to commands and began to look at his surroundings as if he planned to run; thus he was apprehended by K-9 Arca. Douse and Chisholm began to comply when Arca turned her attention to them.

Cape Coral Police Detectives and Forensics responded. The investigation revealed that Douse stole both vehicles and that Davis and Chisholm were aware that the pick-up truck was stolen. McLaughlin and Collins, who were in the pick-up earlier, exited it when they found out it was stolen but proceeded to the location where the stolen Toyota was. Both entered it to check it out, but had no means in which to take the vehicle.

Update- Tornado Recovery Update for the Evening of Sunday January 10, 2016

$
0

(January 10, 2016)-   We know these are trying times for the citizens of Cape Coral, especially those most affected by the tornado damage in the SW area of the Cape.  Even though it's tough to see the devastation the tornado caused, it is great to see the neighbors coming together to give each other a helping hand in the clean-up process.

We ask the public who do not reside in the area to completely avoid Beach Pkwy between Chiquita and Sands Blvd and any other areas damaged by the severe weather event.  There is heavy traffic in the area that is slowing down the process for the multiple crews and residents trying to clean up their neighborhoods and get powered restored.

We want to restore some normalcy back to our citizens as quickly as possible.  If you need Red Cross assistance please call 239-278-3401.  The American Red Cross will have a shelter open at Faith Presbyterian Church of Cape Coral, located at 4544 Coronado Pkwy, Cape Coral.  The shelter will open at 5:00 PM today, January 10th.  The church telephone number is 239-542-2858.

City of Cape Coral Officials have toured the heavily damage areas in the SW part of Cape Coral.  There is a lot of work to be done and this is not going to be resolved overnight.  Cape Coral Police will continue to have additional officers in the area today and in the overnight hours to protect people and property.  Police are still checking identifications to only allow homeowners and tenants to enter the area.

The Cape Coral Police Department urges citizens to assume that all downed power lines are dangerous and to keep your distance.  Homeowners using generators should be aware of carbon monoxide fumes.  Please do not use generators inside the home or garage, only in well ventilated areas outside of the home. At this time there have not been any boil water notices.

Early estimates are showing over 6 million in damages and over 200 homes with light to severe damage.

General questions can be answered by Citizen Action Center at 239-574-0425.  There will be a designated line for permits for Community Development - 239-574-0551.  This line will be operational at 9 AM on Monday, January 11th, 2016.

Beware of Unlicensed Contractors

$
0
0

(January 11th, 2016)  City officials want to stress the importance of not hiring unlicensed contractors to work on homes that have been damaged by the tornado, nor for any other work inside the City limits of Cape Coral.  Entering into a contract is a major project for most people and you want to be assured the business you are hiring is legitimate.  Here are some helpful tips for spotting unlicensed contractors.

Be aware of "special" deals or "this is good only for today".

Most contractors will not go door to door looking for business.

Ask for names and addresses of previous customers.

They may ask for partial or full payment up front without doing any work.  Most companies will collect payment when then the work is completed or during stages of the process.

Contractors must have State and Local license to work in the City of Cape Coral.  The license number must be on the work vehicles and contracts they provide to their customers.

Consumers can check myflorida.com to see if the contractor is licensed or not.

Citizens can also call 239-574-0432 which is the licensing division at City Hall to verify City and State licensing for contractors.

(January 27, 2016) Cape Coral Police responded to a serious injury crash on 1-26-2016 at approximately 8:53 AM.  The crash was located at the busy intersection of SR 78 (NE Pine Island Rd) and NE 24th Ave, Cape Coral.

The Florida Department of Transportation does have plans (in early stages) in place to install a traffic light at that intersection which is much needed.  We hope the traffic light will reduce the number of crashes and injuries that take place at that location.  Our goal is to protect the citizens and visitors traveling the roadways of Cape Coral.  NE Pine Island Rd is a State road, so it was up to the State of Florida (FDOT) to conduct traffic studies and determine if further steps needed to take place, like installing a traffic signal.

Below are the details for the crash investigation which was conducted by Traffic Homicide Investigator (THI) N. Green.

V1 was traveling East on SR 78 (NE Pine Island Rd) and was in the North turning lane, attempting to turn onto NE 24th Ave. V2 was traveling West on SR 78 (NE Pine Island Rd) in the outside lane, approaching the intersection of NE 24th Ave. V3 was traveling South on NE 24th Ave as was stopped at the intersection of SR 78 (NE Pine Island Rd) in the East turn lane.

As V2 was approaching the intersection, V1 began to cross the West lanes of the NE Pine Island Rd. D2 applied the brakes and V2 then began to skid. As V2 was skidding, the front end of V2 struck the right rear of V1. V1 then began to spin clockwise and struck the median on NE 24th Ave. V1 continued to spin and travel West, V1’s right side struck the right front of V3. V1 continued to travel West, crossing all South lanes of NE 24th Ave, at which time V1 left the roadway and came to rest in the grass in the Northwest corner of the intersection. After striking V1, V2 continued to travel West at which time V2 tipped over onto it left side. Once on its side, V2 traveled West, leaving the road and coming to rest in the grassy ditch in the Northwest corner of the intersection.
