Cape Coral students will be recognized.  The winners’ nominations are after the break.

###

Winners

Chris Ghantous – 8th Grade                Oasis Middle School
At a school dance Chris noticed another student that was shy and not mingling with others.  He decided to take the student under his wing, welcome him and introduce him to his friends. Throughout the dance, Chris made sure the other student felt like part of the group. Chris even hung around after the dance to make sure the student got lunch and made it back to class safely.

Jeffrey Graham-9th Grade                Oasis High School
Jeffrey builds and repairs computers.  Most students don’t recognize or value his knowledge and great character.   Jeffrey has befriended another student and recognizes that his friend needs to lose weight.   With the money Jeffrey earns from building and repairing computers and a little assistance from his mom, Jeffrey pays for the gym membership for his friend as well as exercises with him to encourage him to lose weight for his health.

Grayson Guillery – 5th Grade                Gulf Elementary School
Grayson was riding with his dad when he caught something odd out of the corner of his eye.  He thought he saw a person lying on the street.  He asked his dad, a local firefighter, to go back.  Upon making a U-turn they discovered a woman who was face down and unconscious.    Because of Grayson’s quick response, they were able to call for help immediately and began to help the woman who was later sent to the hospital.

Alexandrea Koepke – 4th Grade                Christa McAuliffe Elementary School
Alexandrea has given money to feed and clothe the less fortunate as well as collected can tops for youth cancer patients.

Anthony Pilch – 7th Grade                Challenger Middle School
Anthony befriended a student that was being victimized by bullying.  The student felt embarrassed and refused to report it.  After repeatedly telling his friend to report the bullying Anthony took the initiative and reported the incidents.

Alexander Pucin – 8th Grade                Challenger Middle School
Alexander found a box of chocolate bars and money that were left on a table in the school cafeteria.  The chocolate was being sold by Band students as a fundraiser.  Alexander easily could have kept both the chocolate and the money.  He did not.  He was honest and turned both of these in to the Band teacher so that it could be returned to the student who had left it behind.

Spencer Roach – 11th Grade                Cape Coral High School
On July 28th Spencer and his mom were on their way to pick up Spencer’s sister.  While pulling out of the driveway they heard a car crash.  At the same time they heard a woman yelling for help because her dog had taken off into oncoming traffic.   Spencer took off behind the dog and alerted oncoming traffic.  After chasing the dog for almost a mile the dog was reunited with its extremely grateful owner who hugged and thanked Spencer for his kind deed.

Andie Robinson – 9th Grade                Mariner High School
Andie epitomizes student leadership.  As editor of the yearbook, she took the initiative to dedicate a page to Austin, a student who lost his life in a bike accident.  She went further and had Home Depot donate a tree to honor Austin’s memory.  Andie is always thinking of others and has proven that one person can and does make a difference in so many lives.

Tyler Sbarra – 6th Grade                    Mariner Middle School
Tyler is a remarkable young man.  He is a model student and is always willing to help his peers with their academics.  While riding to school on the bus one morning, he found an expensive smartphone and turned it in to a school administrator.   His teacher was able to go through the contacts on the phone and contacted the parent whose child had of the lost the smartphone.  The mother was overjoyed that someone actually turned in the phone.  In this day and age it would have been very easy for Tyler to keep such an expensive phone but he chose to do the right thing and continue to be a model student.

Chloe Weaver – 3rd Grade                Cape Elementary School
Chloe is a very charitable young lady.  She came up with the idea to ask her schoolmates to donate to the children’s hospital.  Once Chloe got permission she and another classmate went on the televised school news to get the message across.  At the end of the fundraising event, Chloe got 3 large boxes filled with toys, books, crafts and puzzles which all went to the children who have to stay at Golisano Children’s Hospital.

Anthony Williams – 6th Grade                Mariner Middle School
Anthony witnessed a man face down in the swimming pool of his apartment complex.   Anthony got his mother and called 9-1-1.  His mother was able to pull the man out of the pool with the assistance of some men that were working around the building.  Anthony’s actions resulted in the man being resuscitated and taken to the hospital.

Saturday's operation is the last in a series of High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) operations the Cape Coral Police Department conducted since being awarded a $45,000 grant by the Florida Department of Transportation in May.

Operations began on June 6th with the first citywide traffic saturation operation.  In the weeks following, eleven (11) additional traffic saturation patrols and two (2) DUI checkpoints were conducted with the ultimate goal to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities attributable to impaired driving.  Since operations began almost seventeen (17) weeks ago, sixty-one (61) arrests have been made by Officers conducting these operations, forty-seven (47) of which were for DUI.

"It has been a deadly year on Cape Coral roadways, with ten (10) fatality crashes so far; eight (8) of which are drug or alcohol-related.  The grant by the FDOT made these operations possible, allowing the Cape Coral Police Department to take a proactive and very visible approach to curbing impaired driving."- Sergeant Patrick O'Grady, Cape Coral Police Department Traffic Unit.

Cape Coral Police noticed tremendous chatter on social media about the HVE operations.  "We would see hundreds of shares on Facebook and retweets on Twitter every time we announced one, reaching tens of thousands of people online.  People were letting their friends know to take a cab, an Uber, or to have a designated driver.   It brought the discussion of drunk driving to the forefront.  That's exactly what we wanted." Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.

The Cape Coral Police Department has re-applied for the FDOT grant for fiscal year 2016.

(October 1, 2015)-  Cape Coral Police have made an arrest in one robbery, and solved a second.

Officers responded to a report of a robbery at the Circle K located at 935 Country Club Boulevard Tuesday night around 9:15 PM.  A W/M suspect using a towel to conceal his face approached the cashier and demanded money.  The suspect was given cash from he register and he fled the business.

K-9 Officer Clapp was in the area when the call came out and he noticed a white station wagon pass him on SE 10th Street, a short distance from the Circle K.  Officer Clapp followed the vehicle as it stopped at the gas pumps of the Speedway at 1006 Del Prado Blvd. S.  Officer Clapp watched the driver of the vehicle as he remained in the car.  The driver was changing his clothes and threw a white towel over the back seat.  When Officer Clapp approached the driver he was leaning over the seat counting and folding out money.  When Officer Clapp contacted the driver he began hiding the money. Clothes matching those worn by the suspect at the Circle K were also seen in the car.  The driver was detained and identified as Peter Bonagura, 38, of Cape Coral.

Cape Coral Police Detectives  responded to the scene to assist.  Bonagura was placed under arrest for robbery and was later transported to Lee County Jail.  Bonagura's vehicle was towed and searched pursuant to a search warrant.

Earlier on the same day, a tipster came forward regarding a news release Cape Coral Police Department sent last week regarding a similar Robbery at the Publix at 1631 Del Prado Boulevard S. (link to original news release is below) and provided information implicating Bonagura in other robberies that have taken place recently here in SW Florida.  Based on the positive identification from the tipster and additional corroboration from witnesses at the Publix robbery, Detectives charged Bonagura with the September 25th Publix robbery.  He was charged while still in custody at the Lee County Jail.

(October 3, 2015)-  The driver in an overnight street-racing crash has died and his passengers both hospitalized with serious injuries.

Shortly after 4:00 AM, Cape Coral Police, Cape Coral Fire Department , and Lee County EMS responded to a serious injury crash in the 3900 block of Country Club Boulevard.  Officers arrived to find a single vehicle (2011 Volkswagen Golf) that was traveling southbound left the roadway and entered the median, striking a street sign and a tree.  The vehicle then crossed the oncoming lanes of traffic, striking two parked cars, and finally came to rest after it collided with a residence.

The driver of the vehicle, Marcus Anthony Solloway (O/M, 30) of Ft. Myers, died at the scene.  His passengers, Cynthia Astucio (W/F, 23) and Patrick Zachary Padilla (H/M, 34) both of Cape Coral, were both taken as trauma-alerts to a local hospital.  Due to the extent of the injuries, Cape Coral Police Department Major Crash Investigator, Forensics, and Victim Advocates responded to assist.

The Major Crash Investigator determined that at the time of the traffic crash, Solloway was street racing another vehicle which has been described by witnesses as a 2004 silver Chevrolet Monte Carlo. According to witnesses, this vehicle stopped at the scene for a brief moment but then fled prior to emergency personnel arriving at the scene. Solloway's car and this Chevrolet may have collided and, if so, the Chevrolet could possibly have damage to the left (driver’s) side of the vehicle and may have black paint transfer on it.

If you have any information on the identity of the driver that left the scene, please contact the Cape Coral Police Department at 239-574-3223. You can also submit an anonymous tip. Go to www.capecops.com/tips or text a tip- text CCPD+"Your Message" to CRIMES (274637). Finally, you can call Crimestoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS.

Major Crash Investigator Investigating Serious Injury Bicycle Crash

(October 11, 2015)- Cape Coral Police Department Major Crash Investigator is investigating a serious injury crash involving a single bicycle.

Friday afternoon, shortly after 1:00 PM, Cape Coral Police responded to the 4600 block of Del Prado Boulevard S. on multiple calls of a bicyclist down in the roadway.

Officers responded to find 73 year old Michael Fahey laying in the roadway.  Fahey's bicycle was nearby and it was apparent he had suffered severe head trauma from impacting the pavement.

A Good Samaritan stayed with Fahey until EMS responded.  He was trauma-alerted to a local hospital for his injuries.

Cape Coral Police Department Major Crash Investigator, Forensics, and Victim Advocates responded to assist.

Preliminary evidence at the scene points to a single-vehicle crash.

Synopsis of the Major Crash Investigator is below:

DATE: October 9, 2015
TIME: 1:11 PM
LOCATION: 4600 block Del Prado Boulevard South
CR#: 15-016105

BICYCLIST: Michael Fahey, 73, W/M, of Cape Coral, Florida.
INJURIES: Fahey suffered critical head injuries and was trauma alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital.

SYNOPSIS: At 1:11 PM, several people called 9-1-1 in reference to a male laying in the roadway with a bicycle in the outside southbound lane of Del Prado Boulevard, partially on the curb/sidewalk.

Officers arrived and found the bicyclist who had a faint pulse and then become unresponsive.  Lee County EMS responded and transported the male to a local hospital as a trauma alert.  The bicyclist had obvious head trauma to the left rear portion of his head when it impacted the ground.  One of the bystanders that stopped is a doctor and assisted until EMS arrived.

There are no witnesses advising that they saw a traffic crash, all stated that they saw him just laying there.  A white touring bicycle was on scene and showed no damage from a traffic crash with another vehicle.  Several small scrapes on the handlebar and left foot peg matched up with roadway/curb markings, and are consistent with the bicycle going down on its left side toward the roadway from off of the sidewalk.  The bicyclist WAS wearing helmet at the time of the traffic crash but the head injury was located just below the helmet line.  An extensive area canvas of businesses showed no video cameras that caught the incident.

Fahey has no other markings on his body (head and left hand scraping) showing impact from a vehicle.  Fahey was conscious and alert but does not remember anything except leaving his house.  Based on all evidence, this case is NOT a traffic crash (involving another vehicle) at this point.  Major Crash Investigator M/Cpl. Satterlee, Forensics, and Victim Advocate responded.  The next of kin HAS BEEN notified.

BREAKDOWN SINCE 2010, FYI:
