(November 16, 2016)- The "Do The Right Thing" ceremony for November 2016 was held today, November 16, 2016 in City Council Chambers. This monthly ceremony recognizes these outstanding young men and women who "did the right thing", and gives our community the opportunity to come out and show their support. The guest speaker was Cape Coral Councilwoman Rana Erbrick.
Twelve (12) Cape Coral students were recognized. The winners’ nominations are after the break.

Ysabelle Casing – 6th Grade, Caloosa Middle School
During Breast Cancer Awareness month Ysabelle decided that she was going to make a difference in a cancer patient’s life. Ysabelle cut over 10 inches of her hair and donated it to “Locks for Love” which is an organization that makes wigs for cancer patients.
Kyle Weast – 6th Grade, Caloosa Middle School
Kyle is an excellent student who goes above and beyond to help others. Kyle not only has a high GPA but he volunteers to help out in the school cafeteria. He picks up trash, sweeps the floor and washes the table after lunch. He is always well mannered and wants to please.
Mario Alvarez – 8th Grade, Challenger Middle School
Mario noticed another student writing on his computer that he was going to harm himself. Although Mario did not know the student well enough to know if what he read was real, he was concerned enough to alert a school official. Because Mario chose to “Do The Right Thing” and not look away, a student’s life may have been saved.
Breanna Gerlich – 2nd Grade, Christa McAuliffe Charter Elementary School
Breanna was at a friend’s birthday party. While all the older kids at the party started jumping in the pool, a three year old child jumped in the pool without her floaties. Breanna noticed the child without her floaties and got into the pool and pulled her out. Breanna took a proactive action to help prevent a possible drowning accident.
Hannah Johnson – 3rd Grade, Christa McAuliffe Charter Elementary School
Zachary Louzao - 3rd Grade, Christa McAuliffe Charter Elementary School
Hannah and Zachary began a school project to raise money for those affected by Hurricane Matthew. They led their class in creating and selling “pet rocks” to raise money for this cause. Together with their class they were able to raise a total of $200.00 which was sent to the Hurricane Matthew Victims Fund.
Brennan Darley – 8th Grade, Diplomat Middle School
Brennan is an outstanding young man with a passion for helping others. Brennan was first assigned as a student aide in the front office but asked the assistant principal if he could switch to become a student tutor in one of the ESE classrooms. Brennan’s passion for wanting to help other students who struggle with basic academic work is a testament to his character
Jacob Ellis – 7th Grade, Gulf Middle School
Nile McBride – 7th Grade, Gulf Middle School
Daniel Nee – 8th Grade, Gulf Middle School
Jacob, Nile and Daniel saw a runner fall to the ground during a Cape Coral Race. They immediately called the coach for help. Because of their quick action the coach was able to respond right away.
Melainey Lowe – 12th Grade, Oasis High School
Melanie has been a very influential and valuable leader for the Oasis High School Golf Team. Melanie has gone above and beyond to help motivate two other golfers to pursue higher education despite their lack of confidence in their abilities. Because of Melanie’s continuous encouragement both individuals have applied for colleges and have a stronger sense of self-worth.
Julia Della Porta – 2nd Grade, Pelican Elementary School
During a recent canned food drive at Pelican Elementary, Julia and her family donated almost 300 canned/boxed goods to the Salvation Army. Julia has even used some of her allowance to buy baby food. She wanted to make sure that the babies in need were getting food as well.
