Cape Police Partner with US Coast Guard for Annual “Fill the Boat” Toy Drive
(December 5, 2012)- This Saturday and Sunday December 8th and 9th, The Cape Coral Police Department and the US Coast Guard will be at the Walmart Supercenter located at 1619 Del Prado Blvd from 9am-5pm for their annual “Fill the Boat” toy drive.
This is the 6th straight year that the Cape Coral Police Department and US Coast Guard will be running the event. Each year, roughly 2000 toys are collected.
The event in Cape Coral was started by Cape Coral Police Officer (and US Coast Guard Reserve) Matt Squires six years ago. This year the program was in jeopardy because Officer Squires has been called up into active duty by the Coast Guard and is away on orders this year.
Not wanting this program to go away, Matt’s fellow officers stepped up to continue the event this year.
A US Coast Guard Vessel will be parked outside of the entrance of Walmart and the goal is simple, fill the boat with toys!
Purchase a new, unwrapped toy and simply put it in the boat. At the end of the toy drive on Sunday, the toys will be taken to the Cape Coral Police Department where they are then distributed to children in need throughout Cape Coral in time for the holidays.
“We’re proud of our partnership with the Coast Guard and the Fill the Boat campaign that benefits this community each year. Last year marked our Ten-Thousandth toy collected and distributed and we’re looking to build on this tradition. Cape Coral is both a tremendously generous city as well as a city with many children in need. Come out and support this great event.”-Lieutenant Tony Sizemore.
