Cyber-Sleuthing Leads Cape Police to Burglar; Property Recovered

(November 22, 2013)-  On June 08, 2013 at approximately 9:43 PM, Cape Coral Police responded to a past-occurred burglary at 4318 SW 9th Place.

According to the victims, sometime between June 06 and June 08, an unknown person entered their home and removed approximately $1,540.00 in property to include electronics and video games.  In the process of committing the burglary the suspect also cause approximately $4,000.00 in damage to home and property therein.

At the time of the incident there were no suspects or witnesses.

On September 24, Cape Coral Police got the break we needed.  The victim contacted Cape Coral Police Detectives with new information.  The victim was notified by Netflix that he had unauthorized charges on his account and that his account was being used.  The victim was also able to find out that his account was being used on his stolen Nintendo Wii game system from his June 08 burglary.

Detectives made contact with Netflix and obtained the IP address that was using the stolen Netflix account.  They then contacted the Internet Service Provider and subpoenaed the records for that IP address, tracing it to a residence in SW Cape Coral.

On November 04, Detectives made contact with the residents at the home and recovered the stolen Wii console, and a large number of video games for it.  Investigation revealed that it had been given as a gift to a juvenile at that residence by Jaleel Moncrieffe, B/M, DOB: 05-05-1994.  Moncrieffe was the boyfriend of the juvenile at that residence.  The residents returned all property given by Moncrieffe and provided sworn statements to Detectives.

Cape Coral Police Detectives made contact with Moncrieffe who initially provided a bogus story about how he purchased the game system from a friend who had since moved to Italy.  However, he changed his story and finally confessed, post-Miranda, to committing the June 08 burglary.  Moncrieffe was able to describe exactly how the residence was entered and that he knew the victim would be out of town.  Moncrieffe assisted in returning all of the property that belonged to the victim.

On November 21, Detectives made contact with Moncrieffe at Island Coast High School and placed him under arrest.  He was later transported to Lee County Jail.

"This is a case where a small piece of information made all the difference, like the first domino falling in a chain.  Without it, it is likely that this case would have remained unsolved.  We are glad that the victim notified us immediately when they got this new information.  We are also proud of the meticulous work of our detectives who saw this case through to recover property and arrest this suspect."- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer
