Cape Police Warn Drivers of Possible Impostor
(November 20, 2013)- On November 12th 2013 at approximately 2130 hours a citizen reported being pulled over by what he thought was Law Enforcement Officer in the 3500 block of Skyline Boulevard.
The citizen was traveling south on Skyline when a newer model Chevrolet SUV came up behind him at a high rate of speed and flashed its headlights. The citizen then heard an order for him to pull over coming from a PA in the SUV. No red/blue emergency lights were seen.
The citizen stopped and was approached by a Hispanic male wearing a black polo style shirt, black BDU-style pants, and a police style utility belt. No firearm was seen but the male did have handcuffs on his belt. The male asked the citizen if he knew why he was being pulled over. When told no, the male yelled to get his tail light fixed. When asked to show a badge the male stated “have a good night”, got back into the SUV, and drove off.
While there are no criminal charges pending at this time, Cape Coral Police would like to identify and interview this subject.
Suspect Vehicle Description: Newer Chevy SUV, white, tinted windows, no distinctive markings.
Suspect Description: Hispanic male, approximately 25, 5-10, black polo shirt, black BDU-style pants, police style utility belt with handcuffs.
"We don't know for certain that this individual had any nefarious intent, but we would like to find out for sure. While the vast majority of our fleet consists of marked patrol cars, the Cape Coral Police Department does make use of unmarked vehicles during the normal course of our operations to enforce the law and protect the citizens of Cape Coral. However, all of our vehicles, marked and unmarked, have emergency equipment and all of our personnel will provide clear identification, to include their name and ID number upon request."- Det. If there is ever a situation where you are being 'pulled over' and you are unsure of the vehicle that is making the stop, here are some tips:
- Proceed slowly and safely to the nearest point of safety- preferably a well-lit, open, populated area, like a store parking lot. The officer will understand and will appreciate the safer environment in which to conduct their traffic stop.
