BICYCLIST 1 INJURIES: bicyclist suffered serious injuries in the crash.
SYNOPSIS:
Driver of Vehicle 1 was eastbound on on SW 3rd Street and stopped for the stop sign at Nicholas Pkwy, waiting for clearance to cross Nicholas Parkway.
Bicyclist 1 was traveling South on the northbound Nicholas sidewalk, while talking on her cell phone.
Due to a combination of the sun’s location as well as a large cast shadow from businesses on Nicholas Parkway, it is determined that environmental factors contributed to Driver 1’s inability to see the Bicyclist traveling South on the sidewalk.
Driver 1 began to cross Nicholas Parkway, heading East, to continue on SW 3rd Street. Vehicle 1 arrived at SW 3rd Street, East of Nicholas Parkway, while Bicyclist 1 exited the sidewalk and entered SW 3rd Street, still heading South. Bicyclist 1 was struck by Vehicle 1. Bicyclist 1 was ejected from the bicycle making contact with the windshield. Bicyclist 1 was transported as a Trauma Alert to a local hospital for serious injuries.
Cape Coral Police Department Traffic Homicide Investigations was notified and responded to the scene.
Next of kin was notified by Victim’s Advocate Marisol Pena
Alcohol and speed ARE NOT a factor in this crash.
